Mass immunization drill set as test of capacity for disaster
      The East Central Health District and the Wilkes County Health Department will conduct a mass immunization drill on October 2, 3, and 4. The purpose of the drill is to test the capacity to provide mass immunizations in the event of a biological disaster.

      Students from W-WMS will host a special book fair from Scholastic, called the Exchange, on September 24 through 28, from 7:45-9 a.m., to help raise funds for Accelerated Reader (AR) books and tests.

      Beltone at Master service hearing hearing The August Washington-Wilkes Community Blood Drive sponsored by the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in conjunction with Shepeard Community Blood Center had a total of 43 donors, including several who donated for the first time.

Tiger Homecoming activities set all week prior to Banks County game on Sept. 28
      Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Homecoming activities will be held Friday, September 28, at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will play Banks County beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the homecoming will be held during halftime. Spirit Week at W-WCHS will lead up to the halftime homecoming event. During the week, students will participate in dress-up days.

      The Washington-Wilkes Middle School will have a Book Fair September 24-28. The fair will be held in the lobby of the school from 7:45 until 9:00 a.m. Parents, children, and members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend the fair, purchase books, and support the school.

Free legal help to be available October 2 at Senior Center
      Members of the staff of the Geor- gia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, October 2, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

      The youth of the St. Luke Baptist Church of Lincolnton enjoyed a trip to Carowinds September 8. The children enjoyed a day of roller coaster rides and fun in the sun. For lunch they had sandwiches, chips, chicken wings, fruit cup and drinks.

Another Chance
      This little male Chihuahua-mix greets a new arrival at the Washington Wilkes Animal Shelter, a female Spaniel-mix. This little Chihuahua needs a home with adults. These little dogs need to be house dogs. They cannot tolerate the cold. They are loyal and affectionate little dogs when treated kindly. Both dogs need loving homes.

      Opening the show, "The Washington Follies," October 5, 6, and 7 at The Little Theater Playhouse will be the delightful "Primary Performers." A group of young singers from the second and third grades of the Washington Primary School, the group is directed by Ann Tiller.

Eta Omicron sets golf tournament as Nancy Long cancer fundraiser
      The Eta Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will be sponsoring a Golf Tournament this year to raise money for the Nancy C. Long Cancer Fund. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser will remain in Wilkes County to help fellow community members.

      The Senior Adult Back to School Luncheon at the old Tignall School Lunchroom was enjoyed by about 30 people. Many of these people had fond memories of this lunchroom when they were in school here with such wonderful cooks as Mrs. Lou Standard, Mrs. Willie Stribling and Mrs. Bennie Whitener.

Joyce Fry held children's church in the annex and Tina Boatwright and Cody Boatwright were in charge of the nursery. Prayer meeting is held every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

      We had a very unusual day at Ebenezer Baptist Church Sunday. We discussed important issues of church culture, history, vision, theology, expectations, Will of God, priorities, and previous pastors. Dr. Leonard Dupree and Dr. Joe Harris led these discussions while members participated. Afterwards, Ebenezer Baptist Church voted on and chose Dr. Dupree as their pastor.

Cattle feed and high speed don't mix
      A feed truck driver making a delivery last week on Bailey Road in Wilkes County didn't quite make it to the farm. The driver said that he was turning right onto Bailey Road when a car made him turn too sharp and the nearly new truck turned over. First responders used feed to soak up diesel fuel spilling out.

      For the last time this season, the Wilkes Young Farmers will bring back the sounds of thunder. The Wilkes County Young Farmer Truck and Tractor Pull will be held Saturday, September 29, at the facility off Highway 78 at Big Cedar Road in Aonia.
