The Washington High School Class of l957 celebrated its 50-year reunion on Saturday, September 29, at the VFW in Washington.

The event marked the first gathering of the class since its graduation ceremony in l957 and 25 classmates were joined by spouses, retired faculty, friends and family members for the long-awaited occasion.

From the moment the classmates turned onto the VFW property to see a classic l957 Chevy parked out front, compliments of Chan Drake, to their entrance inside that was festively decorated in school colors of blue and gold, they knew the evening would be special.

At the entrance, a table covered with a white linen cloth was centered with a large Tiger. Greenery and candles also decorated the table which featured the Class of l957 graduation picture.

The reception and dining areas were also decorated in blue and gold with Tiger memorabilia from the 1950's.

Dining tables covered with white linens and topped with gold overlays were centered with votive spirals of blue and gold candles accented with magnolia and smilax at each base. Blue mats marked each place.

The buffet table was topped in gold and skirted in blue. Appetizer, dessert and coffee tables were also covered in white, blue and gold with pedestal cobalt blue vases of asparagus fern and illuminated with blue and gold votives.

A special memory table skirted in blue and topped with a white linen cloth held a display of framed pictures of the fivedeceased classmates, George Norman, Evans Davis, Bobby Callaway, Claudelle Gresham and Flora Poss.

As class members and guests arrived, they were greeted by Joan Kennedy Echols and Doris Flynt Rhodes. Each was presented a name tag and asked to pose for photos. Graduates received gold name tags with his or her senior picture matted in blue with blue and gold streamers. Former faculty members, spouses, guests, friends and family were given gold name tags.

Other members of the reunion planning committee in addition to Mrs. Echols and Mrs. Rhodes, Lavenia Burt Henderson, Thad Broome, Lois Ann Garrard Norman, Mildred Lucas Hackney, Thomas Fanning, Frances Edwards Dyson and Eva Griffin Burdette, also welcomed their former classmates and guests.

During the social hour everyone enjoyed appetizers, tea and lemonade as they rekindled friendships, reminisced about their school days and shared their experiences from the past 50 years. In the background a special slide show of 1950s music and black and white pictures from their school days created as a gift by Carol Burt, Class of l960, brought back great memories of school and the times.

Following the reunion photo of the Class of l957, a delicious buffet of sliced marinated sirloin steak, teriyaki mushrooms, potatoes, Cajun corn with sausage and shrimp, salad and garlic bread, prepared by Brian Henderson, was enjoyed. An array of desserts was provided by the committee.

Before dinner, Thad Broome formally welcomed everyone and introduced special guests - retired math teacher, Edna Lamar of Tignall, and former coach Charlie Davidson and wife, Vicky, of Rome.

Classmate Austin Meadows of Dahlonega gave the invocation and blessing.

After dinner Mr. Broome conducted a special memorial ceremony for the fivedeceased classmates. A candle was lighted in memory of each as he or she was remembered.

Following the ceremony members of the Class of l957 decided to contribute to the North Alexander School Association and "Adopt a Window" for their class. A plaque engraved with "Class of l957" will be attached to the sash of their window.

In the program, appreciation was expressed by the Class of l957 and steering committee for the contributions of time and efforts of Brian Henderson, Jason Echols, Debbie and Joe Bennett, Wilkes County School Superintendent Joyce Williams, Chan Drake, Ginny Broome, Mary Katherine Dyson, Melanie and Tom Wells, the Washington Fire Department and The News-Reporter in helping make the event a great success.

At the close of the dinner and program, all stood as Austin Meadows led in the Alma Mater.

To commemorate the 50th reunion, each class member will receive a copy of the slideshow, a CD of pictures taken during the festivities, and an updated directory of names and addresses.

Debbie Anderson and Bill Maxwell provided musical entertainment as the evening continued.

Forty-nine former students, spouses and guests attended.
