Derden to present Camp Lawton talk at CWRT meeting
Dr. John Derden will present "Camp Lawton, Georgia's Lost Confederate Prison Camp" at the Washington Civil War Round Table meeting on Monday evening, October 22 at 6 p.m. at The Jockey Club Restaurant on The Square.
Claibourne Darden, Round Table President, says that the public is invited and welcomed. "The cost of the meeting is $10 per person and includes a very nice dinner." Please make reservations, as soon as possible, by e-mail at claibourne@ darden-atlanta.net or by calling (404)210-5811 and leaving a message.
"Built in 1864 on the railroad line between August and Savannah in Millen, Camp Lawton was 'the largest prison in the world,' yet few of us have ever heard of it. It was a tribute to General Grant who stopped the exchange of prisoners late in the war," Darden said.
Recent archeological examinations and the publication of Robert Sneden's lost diaries and drawings have rekindled interest in Camp Lawton. It is a fascinating story involving the experiences of prisoners, guards, camp administrators, local civilians and the ramifications on Camp Lawton of Sherman's March to the Sea.
Dr. Derden was Professor of History and Chairman of the Social Science Division at East Georgia College in Statesboro. He also served as acting Vice President for Academic Affairs for the college. Dr. Derden has co-authored a number of historical books and published numerous articles.
Membership in the Civil War Round Table is open to everyone.
