Chimney sweep urges caution

Todd Lewis, a chimney sweep certified by the National Fireplace Institute, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, October 16. A Kiwanian himself, Todd discussed cleaning methods used in sweeping a fireplace chimney as well as the proper use and maintenance of fireplaces. Members were alerted to carbon monoxide and firehazards that can occur with improperly maintained fireplace chimneys. He indicated that it took from an hour to an hour and a half to properly sweep a residential fireplace chimney and urged members to have any fireplace chimney inspected annually to avoid chimney fires. Trevin Burriss (right) was the program host for the day.
