Military veterans to be honored Nov. 10 at Winterville ceremony
"Thanks for Our Freedom -- Veterans Appreciation Day," a program to show appreciation for the sacrifices of veterans during their time in the military, will be held on November 10, in Winterville. The event will take place under the pavilion at Pittard Park and is sponsored by veterans in seven Northeast Georgia counties -- Athens-Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Madison, Oglethorpe, Oconee, and Wilkes.
Tommy Clack, former U.S. Army Captain and triple amputee of the Vietnam War, will be the featured speaker. Clack is a nationally known speaker and will relate "the way it is" with the armed services.
"If you veterans would like to hear a great American who has seen his share of hell, you should come to this program," says Ted Ridgeway, chairman of the event. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m.
A barbecue lunch will be available at no charge for all veterans after the program. Any veteran who is planning to be present for the barbecue is urged to call Ridgeway at 706-540-5675 so that the planners will know how many meals to prepare.
The Navy Supply Corps School will present the colors in an impressive formal ceremony. Senior Chief Ward will officiate. John Haley, U.S. Navy (Retired) of Oconee County, will sing the National Anthem and "America the Beautiful."
