Special service Sat. will honor heroes of Kettle Creek
      A commemorative service on Saturday, October 27, will honor the memory of Revolutionary Militia heroes and especially the Battle of Kettle Creek. The event will be held at the old Hammett Cemetery on Courtground Road in Wilkes County near the site of the famous Battle of Kettle Creek. People from Georgia, South and North Carolina, Texas, and Oklahoma will be present.

Seniors can get free legal help from GLSP Nov. 6
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, November 6, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

'Appraisals and Appetizers' headline membership drive
      "An Afternoon of Appraisals and Appetizers" will begin the Washington Wilkes Historical Foundation's 2008 membership drive. The afternoon will feature good food along with a chance to talk with antiques experts about personal treasures. The event will be held Sunday afternoon, October 28, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Wisteria Hall, 225 East Robert Toombs Avenue.

HOSA officersattend leadership conference at Jekyll Island Center
      The officersof Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School attended the annual Georgia HOSA Fall Leadership Conference in Jekyll Island October 12-14. Over 900 students from across Georgia met in the Jekyll Island Convention Center and were welcomed by the Georgia State HOSA president, Jordanna Lundgren.

Homeland Security grant gets new truck for Beulah
      The Beulah Volunteer Fire Department took delivery of a 2008 Ford F-550 truck to use in fighting brush fires Friday, October 5. The truck was purchased with $58,000 in grant monies from the United States Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to FirefightersGrant Program (AFGP), supplemented by $3,000 from the volunteer firedepartment.

      Major General Perry M. Smith USAF (Ret) PhD, of Augusta, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Wasington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, October 23. General Smith, editor of the best selling book "Medal of Honor" and secretary of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, presented a program entitled "The History of the Medal of Honor.

      Mrs. Juanita Bradford and Mrs. John Sutherland visited Mr. and Mrs. Terry Bradford and their grandchildren, Zane and Maddie, who were spending several days while their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Bradford, made a trip to Florida. They came back to Washington Saturday and on Sunday they returned to their home in Greenville, Alabama.

Students spend active day at the farm
      The First Baptist Church Pre-K enjoyed a field trip to Washington Farms in Watkinsville on Wednesday, October 17, where the children went on a hayride, learned about bee pollination, walked through a petting zoo, picked their own pumpkins and had a picnic lunch. Many parents, grandparents, and siblings joined the pre-k children for a fun morning.

Rotarians get historical preview
      Members of the Washington Rotary Club got a sneak preview of the Washington Wilkes Historical Foundation's new DVD featuring interviews with local citizens tellings stories of life in Wilkes County as they remember it. Volume I of the project is nearing completion and videographers Bradley and Kathering Barber (standing, right) showed a four-minute trailer to the club.

Deadlines set Nov. 1 for annual VFW scholarship programs
      Local deadlines are approaching on November 1 for the VFW's student scholarship programs, which award some $2.5 million nationally in college scholarships and incentives. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary holds four contests for grades 6 through 12 for students and teachers in Wilkes County who attend public, private, and home schooling.
