Wilkes 4-H Dairy Club competes in big state fairs; local students show well at Gwinnett, Perry shows
The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Club placed third in Junior Commercial Dairy Heifer Herdsman Contest at the Georgia National Fair. The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Club participated in two shows this fall - the Gwinnett County Fair in Lawrenceville and the Georgia National Fair in Perry. Team members included Lauren Chafin,Miles Chafin,Colby Moore, Marisa Sifre, Marlyse Sifre, Liam Smith, Morgen Swann, Megan Thackston, and William Thomas.
At the Gwinnett County Fair, Thomas placed first in the fifthsixth grade showmanship class. The other showmen all placed in the top 10 in their respective classes. The dairy calves all placed in the top 10 in their weight classes.
At the Georgia National Fair, Thomas placed third in showmanship. Everyone placed well in their showmanship classes. The dairy calves did well also.
The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Club placed third in the Junior Commercial Dairy Heifer Herdsman contest at the Georgia National Fair. This award involves keeping your area clean, neat, and having an educational display for the public to learn more about agriculture.
The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Team expressed its thanks to Billy McAvoy, Ray Moore, Jr., and Marty Smith for providing them with outstanding dairy heifers to show this fall. The team also thanked Frank and Carol Jackson, volunteer leaders for this group. Another thank you went out to the parents of these young people for their support. It takes not only money, but that extra push at home to get animals fed, worked with, and then their support at the shows. The team further thanked local businesses and civic organizations for supporting this 4-H project.
