I understand that there was a real good turnout at this year's 223rd annual fall meeting of the Georgia Baptist Association held at County Line Baptist Church. There were over a hundred in attendance for the day meeting which began at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, with lunch and on into the afternoon. Dr. Norman Waldrip, retiring moderator, passed the gavel on to vice-moderator Rev. Keith Etheridge, pastor of Double Branches Baptist Church in Lincoln County who will become the new moderator at the end of the meeting. .Sunday, October 28, Dr. Norman Waldrip filled in for Rev. Robert Rayner at Phillips Mill Baptist Church while the Rayners were on vacation. .Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend on Sunday. You might want to reset your clocks Saturday night before going to bed. .Those interested in attending the annual meeting at PenfieldChristian Home, remember it will be held Saturday, November 3. .Monday, November 5, Baptist Women World Day of Prayer will be held at the Georgia Baptist Association Mission Center in Washington at 12 noon and 6:30 p.m. .Priscilla Maxwell enjoyed a ride in the "Maxwell Taxi" Thursday of last week to get a flushot and a visit with lady friends at Farmers and Merchants Bank. Sorry, I missed Frances Saggus who just retired on Friday. Then on to McDonald's where we parked beside dear friends, Gail Galbreath of Martinez and her mother, Bernice McAvoy. Bernice and I enjoyed "throwing each other a kiss." We go way back. Sounds silly, but it was fun. Then on Friday, a dear friend, Virginia Hunter, who recently had good news from her cancer doctor, called saying she was bringing us soup and cornbread for lunch. Her visit was added dessert with a hug. Thanks to all for your prayers and loving concern. God is so good. I am well cared for, with love. .Clarice (Mrs. Aubrey) Tyler received word Saturday morning, October 20, that her brother, Warren Combs, 86, of Athens had passed away. He grew up in the Carter's Grove community, one of nine children of the late Charlie and Gertrude Snelson Combs. He is survived by his wife, Ella Ghann Combs; one son, Winston Pride Combs of Athens; sister, Clarice, which is the last one living; several nieces, Faye Sisson McAvoy, Mitzie Fanning Vinson, and nephew, Mickey Sisson. Mr. Combs' wife Ella grew up in our area also, the oldest of four children of the late Will and Nannie Bea Mathis Ghann, and granddaughter of the late Owen "Cap" and Fannie Morris Ghann who are buried at Phillips Mill Baptist Church. She has two brothers, Emmett and Joyce Ghann of Bethesda Baptist Church, Union Point, and Tommy Ghann, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Madison, and his wife, Shirley Sturdivant Ghann; one sister, Fannie Fowler of Dallas. Tommy and Shirley had a son who is a pastor in Rutledge. Their father Will was a brother to the late Addie Joe (Mrs. Dave) Armour of Rayle, mother of Marvin and Jack Armour. Her mother was sister to the late Nora Mathis (Mrs. Marvin) Swann, mother of Irvin Swann of Phillips Mill. I (Priscilla) have fond memories growing up near both families, especially "Mr. Owen" and playing with the grandchildren. This was back in the day when everyone in your community including all races were like one big family, a family of God. Sincere sympathy is extended to all. May we remember and have fond memories of the other Combs children which included Miss Margie who never married and lived to be 94; Nannie Lou Harper, Reba Sisson, Juanita Wheeler, and their brother Marvin "Bo" Combs. Warren and Ella would have been married 61 years last week. Ella had another birthday last week and he would have been 87 in November. I am the last of six children of the late Emmette Lyle :Em.L" and Mattie Sherrer Johnson. My sisters included Annetta Emogene; brother, Doyle. This is written with love and respect. Priscilla J. Maxwell.
