Frosh and sophs win Powder Puff game 12-0
Last Thursday night, the WWCHS student council sponsored the first annual Washington-Wilkes powder puff game. The game pitted the girls of the junior and senior classes against the girls of the freshmen and sophomore classes. The game was close until the very end, with the underclassmen coming out on top 12-0.
The underclassmen started the game with the ball. Two runs by sophomore tail back Yakira Banks of over 15-yards moved the underclassmen over to the upperclassmen side of the field. A 15-yard run by freshmen wingback Tatyana Simmonds and a seven-yard run by freshmen quarterback Cayla Gilland put the underclassmen just inside the upperclassmen 20-yard line. The upper class defense tightened up, however, stopping the underclassmen on fourth down. Senior running back Sharea Dunn started the upperclassmen's drive off with two runs for a total of 20 yards. Two runs by senior quarterback Ashley Kearney and two more runs by Dunn crossed the upperclassmen over mid-field and ended the first quarter of play.
The second quarter started with another run by Dunn. Two plays later, the upperclassmen were faced with a fourth down. The upperclassmen faked the punt, with Kearney gaining the necessary yards for the drive to continue. The drive ended on the next play, with freshmen Gabby Lavender intercepting a Kearny pass at the underclassmen's eight-yard line. Short runs by Simmonds and Gilland moved the underclassmen out to their 23-yard line, where Banks took the toss and outran the entire upper class defense for 77 yards and a touchdown. The two-point-conversion was no good, leaving the underclassmen's lead at 6-0 with 4:11 left in the first half. Three incomplete passes caused the upperclassmen to punt on their ensuing drive. Haley Ward's punt was fumbled by the underclassmen, but they were able to retain possession of the football. Two short runs by Banks and another by Simmonds ended the half.
For halftime of the powder puff game, the cheerleaders came out on the field and performed a stunt. The cheerleading squads were made up of guys from the four classes. Senior Josh Cosby, junior Lee Thomson, and junior Jamal Callaway went up in the stunt. The cheerleaders supported both teams during the game and provided lots of crowd entertainment.

Junior wide receiver Lindsey Guin got the handoff from Dunn on a reverse and ran 14 yards for a first down. An eight-yard carry by Dunn and
four-yard pass from Kearney to Guin gave the upperclassmen another first down. The drive would end after that, however, with the upperclassmen turning the ball over on downs at the under class 41-yard line. On fourth down and twelve, sophomore Uniqua Freeman came in at quarterback and completed 45-yard pass for a first down at the upperclassmen's 16-yard line. The quarter ended three plays later with the underclassmen getting ready for another fourth down.

The upperclassmen defense again stopped the underclassmen on fourth down, with the upper class offense taking over on its 13-yard line. The upperclassmen started their drive with a 50-yard pass from Kearney to Guin. An 11-yard pass from Kearney to senior wide receiver Kim Jenkins on second and long left the upper- classmen just short of a first down at the underclassmen 29-yard line. The upperclassmen were not able to convert on fourth down, turning the ball over on downs. The underclassmen went three-and-out, turning the ball back over at their 29-yard line. A 21-yard pass from Kearney to senior wide receiver Jaleesa Hampton on third and long gave the upperclassmen a first down at the under class 12-yard line. The underclassmen defense held strong, stopping the upperclassmen at the four-yard line with 1:05 left in the game. The upper class defense fought hard and got the ball back at the underclassmen's four-yard line with enough time for one last play. Kearney launched the ball into the end zone, but Banks intercepted the pass and ran it back 102 yards for a touchdown, ending the game with a 12-0 score in favor of the underclassmen.

This Friday night, the Washington Wilkes Tigers host the Tigers of Greene County. Washington and Greene are tied for second in the 8AA south sub-region.
