Blood drive Friday will aid Charping's fight with leukemia
      Christopher Charping, a senior at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School, has been diagnosed with acute leukemia after becoming quite ill at school on Tuesday, November 6. Christopher is the 18-year-old son of Thomas and Donna Charping of the Metasville community in Wilkes County.

      Christmas At Callaway Plantation will be held Friday, December 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. All the rooms in the Brick House, Log Cabin, Country Store, Dally Cabin, Gilmer House and the Weaving and Ironing House will be featuring period decorations and will be open for visitors.

Middle, high schools to host open house Tuesday, 3:30-6
      Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Washington- Wilkes Middle School will host a joint open house on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, for the parents and students of each school. Between the hours of 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., parents may pick up their child's latest progress report and meet with teachers.

Clubs 'Burn the Devil' out of cancer
     Brittnay Turner, FCCLA president at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensine High School; John Lovvorn, FBLA president; and Debra Williamson, HOSA president; presented an $800 check to Dan Coxwell, a representative of the American Cancer Society, after the monedy was raised during the "Burn the Devil" campaign in late September. The three organizations were in charge of the fund-raiser which collected donations from the high school, middle school, and elementary school.

Hospital's 'Tour of Treats' teaches Halloween safety, provides goodies
      Wills Memorial Hospital hosted its annual "Tour for Treats" on October 31. Approximately 40 children and grandchildren of hospital employees were taken on a tour through the hospital. Each department provided treats for the children and displayed Halloween decorations. WMH patients and employees enjoyed the sights and sounds of children trick-or-treating through the halls.

Friend of Youth auction, barbecue to be held by Optimists on Nov. 15
      The annual Optimist Club Friend of Youth Auction and Barbecue will be held Thursday, November 15, at the VFW Post 5899 home on Andrew Drive in Washington. Frank Bentley will be preparing his always-delicious barbecued pork, Brunswick stew, and all the trimmings. Plates will be available for eat-in or take-out beginning at p.m.

Deputies give students some safety tips
     Sheriff Deputies Detric Jones and Luke Montgomery visited the Prekindergarten classes at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School last week to share Halloween safety tips with the students. Pet of the week
      This little puppy is called Precious. She is a Jack Russell Terrier mix and has a winning personality. She would be a happy little pet. If your dog misbehaves, shake an empty soda can that has been filled with pebbles. The dogs don't like the noise.

      The Pre-K Program at Washington Wilkes Elementary School serves 100 four year old children. The Pre-K is in its fourth year on the elementary school campus, and it just seems to be getting better all the time! The Pre-K program at W-WES is open to all Wilkes County four year olds who are four by September 1.

CSRA unemployment remains unchanged at 6.1% through Sept.
      The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) was unchanged at 6.1 percent from August to September. Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate rose to a 4.6 percent in September, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.5 percent in August. The state's rate was one-tenth of one percent higher than the U.S.

Danner explains about long-term care
     Caroline Danner, Community Relations Coordinator for the Wilkes Health Care Center, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, November 6. Danner's presentation was titled "Long Term Care - What It Means Today." She discussed the operation and admittance procedure of the 47-bed, 15-room center and told members that the center was certified as a hospice care facility and that they were in the process of expanding their rehabilitation capabilities working closely with Wills Memorial Hospital. Kiwanis President Bes Moore was the program host for the day.

4-H spooks party with residents
      Wilkes County 4-H has adopted Harpers Personal Care Home in Washington and celebrates monthly birthdays with a cake and gifts each month. 4-H'ers sing and visit with the residents. Also once a month they play bingo with the residents. During the month of October the Wilkes County 4-H Council officersand board of directors held a Halloween party for the residents.

      The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School made treat bags for the students at Wilkes County Head Start and President Brittnay Turner delivered them on Wednesday, October 31. FCCLA focuses on community involvement and wanted to remind the children to be safe on Halloween night.

Young volunteer at Toombs House says 'It's my job'
      youth volunteer at the Robert Toombs House State Historic Site. He began his volunteer work in August 2005, after a tour of the site. Every week since then, he has come to volunteer with a good attitude, with enthusiasm, and for at least one hour each time. His only absences have been due to illness.
