Relay for Life to kick off at Tuesday event

The Relay for Life of Wilkes County will hold its kickoff celebration Tuesday, January 9, leading up to the fourth annual Relay to be held here in May.

The celebration will be held at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Participants are asked to RSVP by Friday by calling 866-227-0904.

"Come help us celebrate our 2006 victories and learn more about the 2007 Relay for Life of Wilkes County," said Summer Garrison of the American Cancer Society. "Our theme this year is 'Cancer is No Vacation.'"

The celebration is also a time for individuals to learn more about Relay for Life, she said, and how they can get involved.

The fourth annual Relay for Life of Wilkes County will be held May 4-5 at the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation track from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The Relay is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around the track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer.

"The American Cancer Society Relay for Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated," Garrison said.
