THE ACADEMIC CORNER
W-WES students to benefit from After-School Program
The after-school program began on Principal Wanda Jenkins is pleased to announce the After-School Program at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School is in session beginning this week. The program is designed to serve two groups of students: 1) those that need additional assistance in reading and/or math and 2) those that are not on track for promotion in reading and/or mathematics based on school level assessments.

Funding for the after-school program is available through Title VI, Part B - The Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP). This program was designed to assist rural school districts in using Federal resources more effectively to improve the quality of instruction and student academic achievement. Because of this Federal funding, WWES offers its program at no cost to local taxpayers. Tuesday, January 9 and will end on Thursday, March 29. Each afternoon, students receive a nutritious snack and are provided a short time for "homework help", but the majority of the after-school time is devoted to direct instruction in reading and mathematics. The curriculum focuses on reading vocabulary and comprehension, individualized reading skills such as phonics and decoding, and also on basic math skills. Small group and individual teaching is provided. Practice opportunities for the CRCT are made available through the Georgia Department of Education's Online Assessment System.

Mrs. Angela McGill will serve in her fourth year as Director of the After-School Program. Highly-qualified teachers from the WWES fac- ulty serve as teachers in the After- School Program. Those teachers are Mrs. Jimmie Drinkard, Mrs. Peggy Jones, Mrs. Barbara Lenon, and Mrs. Lisa Newsome. Typically, 20 students from each grade level participate in the program. These numbers allow students to be served in small groups at a ratio of approximately 10:1.

"I am delighted that we are able to provide this type of intense instruction for our students," said Principal Jenkins. "I am so proud they are willing to work hard to meet their academic requirements. I am equally proud of the teachers who are willing to work extra hours for the benefit of these students and their desire for success. Finally, I am proud of the parents who support their children by allowing them to participate in this valuable program."
