"If winter comes, can spring be far behind?" Percy Bysshe Shelley. The fact is we have not had the winter yet. Bulbs in the ground think it is early spring and are peeking out. We all know this is not all there is to winter for this year. Do you remember a really bad snowstorm in March? ..Remembering Mrs. Duke - with affection - the following was in The Vent of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC): "Pictures are hung. Saddam will be hanged." She would have surely thought this was submitted by one of her former students. ..Like The Office Cat, some of us have followed the decision of the Department of Transportation (DOT) to leave small towns and communities off state road maps. Well, now it seems that [quote from AJC] "The DOT has faced an avalanche of 'pretty impassioned' comments on its decision to simplify the map . . . The last straw appeared to be laid by the complaint of yet one more Georgian: Gov. Sonny Perdue. (Perdue himself was from a small town.") The decision now is that some 400 small towns will return to print on all state highway maps, at least those with ZIP codes, and possibly the rest. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Aonia and Sandtown. ..Are people getting kinder and is there more love for one's fellowman? Did you hear about the man in Manhattan who jumped on the subway track to save a man who had fallen? Also, just recently babies have fallen off fire escapes and out third-floor windows only to be caught by caring passers-by. Maybe hearing of these acts of kindness and heroism will give us great comfort for 2007. ..Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Keener visited with Mr. and Mrs. Chris Keener, Madison and Nolan, in Loganville during the holidays. Also visiting were Vince Keener of Snellville, and his friend, Betty Viana of Miami (South Beach), Fla. Betty is originally from Venezuela. She introduced us to the tradition of "tamales (minced, seasoned meat, with currants, peppers, and onions packed in cornmeal dough, wrapped in plantain leaves and steamed) at midnight on Christmas Eve." Other cultures and traditions are interesting; but, we decided we will stick with our tradition of turkey, dressing, cranberries, and ham for our Christmas. ..Grandparents in the North Wilkes area were called very early Christmas morning by a doting grandson to share all Santa had left. At that point, granddad mentioned that a bag of switches was left at his house; but [having more than one grandson] he didn't know for which grandson. The brilliant grandson said, "Granddaddy, read the tag!" Out of the mouth of babes. ..Did you hear about the Potlikker Film Festival in Midtown (Atlanta) this weekend? It is a commitment to Saving Southern Food in 2007. On the menu, there is mention of Potlikker Shooters. I wonder if those are turnip greens, collards, or cabbage? ..Kay and Alex Tyler attended a teaparty birthday party for their granddaughter, Sydney, who turned five on January 5. This tea party was held on Saturday in Hoschton at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Tyler. All little girls were to wear hats, gloves and their pearls. Kay and Alex didn't wear hats and pearls, but joined in with all the fun and took plenty of pictures. I understand that Sydney's brother Caleb served cookies from a silver tray, but he and brother Jordan spent most of the afternoon in their tree house in the backyard to stay out of the way of the girls. .. Spending the weekend with O'Neil and Celeste Adams were Kimberly and Joe Coots and sons, Chase and Connor, of Ranger; Amanda and Billy Range and Abbey of Monroe; and five dogs. They all had a wonderful time together. .. Paula and Gary Butts, Louise Harper, and Michelle and Trey Smith and Harper attended the wedding of Louise Harper's granddaughter, Elizabeth Harper, and Jeff Brannen in Macon Saturday. ..A birthday party was given for Dr. Sophia Bamford at her church, Independence United Methodist Church, on Saturday evening. Celebrating Dr. Bamford's 94th birthday were her great-niece and her husband; Tonya and Charlie Jones and their sons, Ethan and Mason, who were joined by the Coes of Washington in presenting a musical Happy Birthday by playing violins. Many friends and family members enjoyed a spaghetti supper with two birthday cakes baked by Jean Rhodes and Joan Baker. ..Another birthday was celebrated on December 28. Myrline Thornton was honored on her 81st birthday in her home with a dinner party. Those attending were Jerry Thornton, Alicia Thornton, Robert Randolph and Nicholas of Athens; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Paul, Amanda, Caroline, and Patrick of Oxford, Michigan; Bill Fincher of Lexington; Jake Riotherford and Kensie Willer of McDonough; and Russ Johnson of Tignall. Myrline enjoyed the calls, cards, food (including the birthday cake) and the fellowship with friends and family. ..It seems like it has been the month for many birthday parties and celebrations. Mary Will Denard celebrated her 65th birthday. Amelia Chafin, Robbie Tanner, and Teresa Tanner took her out to eat for her birthday on Friday. When you get a certain age you don't mind everyone knowing how old you are. ..Speaking of birthdays reminds me of the days when I was teaching. A little girl whose name was Angela told me it was her birthday. I didn't know she told me that because she wanted a pencil. I always gave birthday pencils. So we gave her the pencil, a birthday spanking, and sang "Happy Birthday." Then this little boy spoke up and said, "Mrs. Gammon, Angela's birthday is not today. It's in the summer because I went to her birthday party." Angela said, "It is too my birthday. My mama changed it." ..Ida Norman has suffered a small stroke and is in the hospital in Sylvania. Let's keep her in our prayers. ..We are glad to hear that Linda Denard is home now and is continuing to improve after having heart surgery. She wishes to express thanks to everyone who was so good to her with food, cards, and prayers.
