Wrestlers strong but several injured

TYSON GILLAND WAS A PERFECT 5-0 AT THE TOURNAMENT LAST WEEKEND But a shortage of healthy wrestlers is keeping W-W from finishing high as a team.
While injuries continue to plague the Washington-Wilkes Tiger varsity wrestlers, their middle school counterparts are racking up win after win and are currently undefeated in the 2006-2007 season.

The latest W-WMS victory came on January 3 when the team beat Lakeside Middle School and boosted the season record to 8-0. Scoring pins in the match were Rob Lovvorn, Devinn Ferris, James McAvoy, David Martin, Chad Cordell, and Will Lawson.

The varsity also added two notches in the wins column, beating Lakeside, 48-36, and Butler, 60- 18, in a convincing match.

Individual results follow.

W-W 48, Lakeside 36 119: John Lovvorn by pin 125: Josh Cosby by pin 130: Evan Harrison by pin 135: Tyson Gilland by pin 140: Dywane Hampton by pin 145: Jesse Crago by pin 152: Trey McCants by pin 160: Jermayne Hanosek by pin

W-W 60, Butler 18 119: John Lovvorn by forfeit 125: Josh Cosby by pin 130: Derrick Ferris by forfeit 135: Evan Harrison by forfeit 140: Tyson Gilland by pin 145: Jesse Crago by pin 152: Trey McCants by pin 160: Jermayne Hanosek by pin 189: Ryan Cutler by forfeit

Participating in the Georgia/Carolina Classic at Hart County on January 6, the varsity posted a strong showing, according to head coach Eddie Lovvorn, but the problem was that healthy wrestlers were available to compete in only nine weight classes.

As a result, the Tigers were able to come away from the event with only one team win, defeating Cedar Shoals. Individually, however, the healthy Tigers posted some impressive numbers.

John Lovvorn and Tyson Gilland were 5-0 at 119 and 135. Trey Mc- Cants was 4-1 at 152. Josh Cosby and Evan Harrison went 3-2 at 125 and 130. Sophmore Anthony Smith recorded his first varsity win with a pin against Cedar Shoals. And Lovvorn, a junior, notched his 100th career victory.

W-W returned to Hart County on Tuesday, January 9, for a dual meet with Jackson County and Hart, but results were unavailable by deadline for this issue. On January 12, the Tigers will take part in the Area 2- AA Team Tournament to be held in Toombs County beginning at 10 a.m.

Then, next Tuesday, January 16, the wrestlers will finally return home to host Oconee County and Hart County at 5 p.m.
