Tigers struggle in tourney, beat Lincoln Red Devils, host 3-game home stand

KHIRY TUTT GETS A SHOT OVER A RED DEVIL The Tigers hung on to win despite a late Lincoln challenge.
In holiday action on the basketball court, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers were less than hot at the Jackson County Christmas Tournament in Jefferson just after Christmas, but bounced back to beat the Red Devils of Lincoln County at their place last Saturday.

It looked like the Lincolnton game was going to be a cakewalk. Through three quarters and into the fourth, W-W build up a comfortable 18-point lead. But the Devils heated things up, the Tigers went cold, and the game became critical as time wound down.

Lincoln County slammed two dunks and sank three 3s to cut their deficit to just one point with 1:50 left in the contest. But the Tigers managed to hold on and claim the win at 58-56.

Lucious Stewart was the only Tiger to score in double figures and he did it in a big way with 25 points against the Devils. He also posted a double in rebounds with 10. Jarekus Bowman added nine points while Khiry Tutt pumped in seven, claimed eight rebounds, and blocked four shots. Kelmetrus Wylie led the team with eight assists to go along with his six points. Larry Davis had half a dozen points and 11 rebounds while Scotty Long made five points and blocked four shots.

LUCIOUS STEWART MANEUVERS FOR POSITION He led the Tigers in scoring with 25 points against Lincoln County.
In the Jackson Tournament, W-W led off with a win over Jackson (64- 56) but then lost to Covington's Eastside by three points and to Greater Atlanta Christian by 11. The boys had been down by 20 against G.A.C. at the half but a second half rally wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. G.A.C.'s coach, Ronald Bradley, is the winningest active coach in the state.

The Tigers began a three-game hone stand on Tuesday, January 9, against Putnam County. Details of that game will be reported next week. On Friday and Saturday, January 12-13, W-W will host Oglethorpe County and Banks County, respectively, before going back on the road to face Greene County on January 16.
