Report puts hospital's contribution to county economy at $11.2 million While the value of medical care, emergency treatment, and other health-related services is obvious in a rural community with a local hospital, sometimes the value of the hospital's total contribution gets overlooked. A recent report by the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) helps to bring that total economic impact into focus and figures updated by Wills Memorial Hospital (WMH) provide an accurate report of the facility's contribution to Wilkes County as of the end of its last fiscal year, 2006. In that year, WMH provided more than $5.8 million in direct pay and benefits for its 195 full and part time employees. Applying the U.S. Department of Commerce earnings multiplier of 1.93, means that the hospital is responsible for generating total household earnings of over $11.2 million for the local economy during this period. In addition to its payroll impact, WMH purchases an annual average of $315,000 in goods and services directly from local businesses and vendors. The GHA report actually contained figures for 2004. However, unless otherwise noted, figures reported here are updated to 2006 as provided by Wills Memorial and the same multipliers are used. The GHA report also noted that WMH had to- tal direct expenditures of more than $10.9 million needs including continued cuts in Medicare and in its last fiscal year.
