State librarian visits civic club
Deputy State Librarian David Singleton was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, January 16, when he discussed the public library system in Georgia, noting that the state was the first in nation to provide was the first in nation to provide high speed internet service from its nearly 6,000 computers that log 13 million inquires per year. He told members that there are 58 central libraries and 382 branches and service outlets with nearly 32 million visits per year.
Singleton said that Georgia is the fourth fastest growing state in the nation, ranking ninth in total population which represents a challenge to the library system to keep pace with public demand for services. He said that the 2007 budget included funding to replace hardware and ensure compliance with the federally mandated "Child Internet Protection Act."
