Matthew Rodriguez wins National Geography bee

Matthew Rodriguez (center) acceptes a plaque from his social studies teacher, Mrs. Alfriedia Rucker (left), and Wanda Jenkins, principal of W-WES.
Matthew Rodriguez, a fourth grade student at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 19th annual National Geography Bee.

A total of 17 fourth- and fifth-grade students participated in the bee.

Matthew will now take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bees. Matthew received a medal, and his name will be engraved on the plaque located in the lobby of W-WES. Matthew is the son of Salvador and Tara Rodriguez.
Students that participated in round one of the National Geographic Bee are (front, l-r) Delvonte Harris, Christian Keiser, Austin Denard, Logan Griffin, Mary Katherine Strother, Octavian Long, Matthew Rodriguez, (back row) Jamille Ferrell, Donnie Wynn, Tremond Ferrell, Andrew Echols, Brianna Martin, Brendan Dukes, Aaliyah Berry, Dulce Alvarez, Lakeicha Wooten, and Shelby Wall.
