Here's some good news ... Vernilla and J.C. Clark are going to keep the Tignall Produce Market open every Saturday now. We are fortunate to have this place in town. They have fresh produce including cabbage, squash, apples, sweet potatoes, lemons and limes, and they also have books for children. .. Albert and Eudora Huyck attended the ordination service of Thomas Huyck at the North Macon Presbyterian Church Sunday. After the service the family went to the home of the Thomas Huyck family and exchanged Christmas presents. On Wednesday through Friday of last week, Eudora and Albert spent some time in Helen with grandchildren, Adam, David, and Jori Huyck. Christmas presents were exchanged with the grandchildren while there. Eudora says that was a warm January visit in Helen where it is usually a lot colder than it is here. ..Layton and Gloria Harris traveled to Abbeville, S.C., Friday night to the birthday party of their granddaughter, Laken Harris, who celebrated her seventh birthday. The party was held at her other grandmother's home with about 25 family members and friends attending. ..Spending the weekend with Kay and Alex Tyler was granddaughter, Sydney Tyler, of Hoschton. Her brother, Jordan, was celebrating his eleventh birthday with five boys spending the night so she decided it was a good time to stay with Nana and Pop. This was definitely not going to be a pearl and hat party. ..Mrs. Randy Rhodes, Taylor and Christopher of Danielsville visited William Rhodes over the weekend. ..Visiting with Sara Frances Henderson for the weekend was her daughter, Frances Johnson, of North Augusta. ..Christine Burton has been in the hospital and is now home. Her daughter, Louanne Morris of Evans, came to be with her when she came home and spent from Monday through Thursday of last week. It was good to see Christine back at church Sunday. ..We are sorry to hear that Jack Rhodes has been in the hospital but we are glad to hear that he is now at home. We hope he continues to improve. ..Let's keep Elizabeth (Lamar) Archer in our prayers. She will have had surgery on Monday, January 15, and hopefully she will pull through this. She has a brain tumor now be- sides the lung cancer. She is the daughter of Edna Lamar and sister of Ernest Lamar. ..Beulah Baptist Church will be having a pancake supper on Saturday, January 27. Details will be added in next week's paper. ..Senior members of Beulah Baptist Church will be going to Old Macdonalds, a fish restaurant in North Augusta, on Friday night. ..A group from Mallorysville Baptist Church had supper in the home of Tony and Marian Hammond Saturday night. Those present were Linda and Leon Aycock, Vivianne and Bobby Wilson, Pat and Otis Callaway, Mary Will and Ralph Denard, Nancy and David Hilley, Debbie and Joe Burton, Kris and Donnie Berry, Howard Jordan, Sybil Ashmore, Annie and Monty Browning, Dianne and Jerry Compton, Cassie Burton and Barrett Ware. They had moose (killed in Alaska and cooked in Tignall by Monty Browning), pork cook over purple cabbage, rolled chicken breasts, and ham cooked by Marian and Tony with the aid of Monty, and vegetables, salads and desserts brought by this church group which has a lot of wonderful cooks. ..I don't think anyone can go hungry in our area. The youth of Tignall Baptist Church will be sponsoring a Soup and Sandwich Luncheon after the worship service January 28 in the Family Life Center. There will be no charge, but donations will be greatly appreciated. ..The senior members of Tignall Baptist Church and some other neighbor churches enjoyed a soup and sandwich lunch Tuesday, January 9, with a program presented by Paul Cutts of Bankers Life and Casualty Co. He talked to everyone about what to expect in the next phase of their lives, how to take care of their finances, and about long term care. Paul Cutts was a talented entertainer with his voice and the guitar. I told him later that I enjoyed the music, but the rest of the program was depressing. I know it is something we have to face, but isn't old age depressing? ..I'm sure many people ate lots of chocolate during the Christmas, and now that Valentine's Day is coming up there is another excuse to eat chocolate. Of course, now we hear that chocolate is good for you. I found these words of wisdom about chocolate: "As with most fine things, chocolate has its season. . . .Any month whose name contains the letter A, E, or U is the proper time for chocolate." ..The News-Reporter has really gone high tech. The colored pictures are great. Thank you. ..Well, our South Georgia farmers are gearing up for the plant-to-fuel issue. It seems they are breaking ground on a $175 Million corn-tofuel factory out of Camilla which is scheduled to open in mid-2008. This was mentioned in the January 14, 2007, issue of The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Also, a short article appeared in the January 2007 issue of Georgia Trend, wherein Tony Slagg, CEO of First United Ethanol, stated: "At the turn of the [20th] century, 40 percent of our land was used to raise fuel - the corn and hay to feed the horses, mules, and oxen that worked the farms, . . . but when [farming and transportation] became mechanized, all that land went into food production for human consumption." "Ethanol," he adds, "will change corn from a food stock to a fuel stock." Corn stalks run really short around I'd Rather Be in Tignall Fall Festival time. We may need to make a run to South Georgia in the future. Also, the use of corn for the production of Ethanol is great for our economy but what could be better than creamed corn or cornon the-cob around June or July?
