Church should ask for guidance TO THE EDITOR: Should the "Church" of Jesus Christ be silent? I'm new to the Washington area and feel somewhat unqualified to speak on behalf of the people who have lived here for years. Therefore, let me share my personal concerns. When I saw an advertisement on the front page of our local newspaper inviting the public to participate in satanic activities, it was like a slap in the face to me, a believer in Jesus Christ. Should I shrug it off thinking this a harmless gimmick used to bring business into the community through the use of possibly the most prestigious building in our city? Or should I take a chance on making a bad "first impression" on those I hope to build friendships with? As usual, my carnal nature tells me to keep my mouth shut and let "others" handle this for the church. But the Spirit of the Lord keeps prompting me to take up my cross and do the right thing for the kingdom of God. Therefore, I must say that these activities are against Holy Scripture and against the teachings of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm sure I do not need to give you chapter and verse in your Bible, but I will at your request. I believe it is time for the church to stand up in the face of evil and declare the righteousness of God's Kingdom. Until we are willing to forsake all, even our fear of being rejected, for the sake of the gospel, I suspect the power of the Holy Spirit to work through us will be greatly hampered. (Holy Spirit stir your church again!) I recall in the scripture when Jesus shared His last supper with His closest followers. As Judas dipped into the bowl, Jesus told him of his soon betrayal. Jesus said, "The Son of man will be betrayed as it is written. But woe to that man by whom he is betrayed." Surely evil will force its way into the affairs of man, but woe to that man who intentionally opens the door. My prayer is that the church of Jesus Christ will fall on their knees and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in this time of testing. Note: I do not intend my personal expression to be considered the voice of any organized church or ministerial association. A concerned child of God, REV. ALEC GEORGE
(Editor's note: The item on the front page of The News-Reporter was not an advertisement; it was a story presented as news that the event would be the first of its kind. It was an announcement of a "paranormal investigation" and never mentioned "satanic activities" of any kind.)
