Wrestlers beat Metter, lose in tourney, now preparing for state meet in Macon

Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Tiger wrestlers took their first match at the Area 2- AA Team Tournament last weekend with a strong, 57-18, win over Metter, but later lost to Area Champion and tournament host Toombs County.

Against Metter, the Tigers scored 10 wins, seven of which were by pin. Individual winners by weight class were:

119 - John Lovvorn by pin 125 - Josh Cosby by pin 130 - Evan Harrison by pin 135 - Tyson Gilland by pin 140 - Dywane Hampton by pin 145 - DJ Willis by forfeit

152 - Jesse Crago by pin

160 - Trey McCants by 8-5 decision

171 - Jermayne Hanosek by forfeit and

189 - Ryan Cutler by pin In the ensuing match against Toombs County, W-W posted only a single win as its wrestlers were all bumped up one weight class. Tyson Gilland scored the only win with a pin at 140 pounds.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, January 9, the Tigers' troubles began with a double loss to the host school and Hart County at Jackson County. Individual winners were:

vs. Jackson County

119 - John Lovvorn by 4-3 decision

130 - Evan Harrison by pin

135 - Tyson Gilland by 11-2 major decision and

145 - DJ Willis by 8-7 decision

vs. Hart County 119 - John Lovvorn by pin 135 - Tyson Gilland by pin 145 - DJ Willis by pin 152 - Trey McCants by pin and

160 - Tyler Brown by forfeit

The Tigers were at home on Tuesday, January 16, for a dual match with Oconee County and Hart County. Then on Friday, January 19, the team will travel to Macon for the State AA Team Tournament. The wrestlers will also compete against Eagle's Landing Christian Academy, Athens Christian School, and St. Pius at ELCA on January 23 beginning at 5 p.m.
