No more 'struggling,' W-W now undefeated in 8-AA,11-6 overall

SCOTTY LONG GOES OVER A COUPLE OF PATRIOTS The Tigers have won five straight and are 3-0 in region play.
If there was any "struggling" by the W-W Tigers in that Christmas tournament a few weeks ago, it's all over with now. After bouncing back with a win over Lincoln County as reported last week, the Tigers entered region play with two straight wins and tacked on a convincing slaughter of Banks County to make it four in a row.

The week's games (through Saturday) put the Tigers at 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the region. However, Head Coach Don Keiser is quick to point out that all the teams in the region are very closely matched and any one of them could beat any other on any given night. "We could end up 2-8 in the region, or we could be 10-0," he said. "It's anybody's guess."

Individually, Tiger superstar Lucious Stewart has earned Player of the Week honors from The Athens Banner-Herald for his outstanding play, especially recently. The junior shooting guard is averaging 22 points and almost 13 rebounds per game through 16 games. He is one of only three players ever to have been freshman starters for Head Coach Don Keiser. Stewart's contribution for the week's three games includes 63 points and 38 rebounds.

GARY WILBURN LOOKS FOR AN OPPORTUNITY The Tigers will host Morgan and Lincoln this weekend.
Region action began on Tuesday, January 9, when the boys hosted Putnam County's War Eagles for the seasons region opener. Notching a 48-44 win, the Tigers were led by Stewart with 17 points and a dozen rebounds. Jarekus Bowman fol- with nine points and seven rebounds while Larry Davis clocked in with eight points and six boards. Kelmetrus Wylie was usual with seven assists while adding seven points of his own.

On Friday, January 12, the Oglethorpe Patriots kept things close throughout the game but were never dominant as W-W took its second region win to the locker room beneath the elementary school gym.

Stewart and Khiry Tutt led the Tigers in scoring as they poured in 24 and 14 points, respectively, while pulling down 14 and 10 rebounds between them. No other Tigers hit double figures except Wylie who had an even dozen assists in the game.

Even though Banks County was in the region in football, it's not in basketball, so the next game did not count as such since the sub-regions are different. Nevertheless, the Tigers put it in the bag and went home with an easy win, 68-46.

Three Tigers made doulble figures and the team was again led by Stewart with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Bowman and Gary Wilburn hit 12 poitns and 11 points while six other team members contributed to the total score. Wylie had his average eight assists in the game.

This weekend, W-W comes home again for games against Morgan County on Friday night and Lincoln County on Saturday night. Then on Tuesday, January 23, they will be at North Oconee to begin a three-game road trip.
