George to serve as pastor at Carter's Grove Baptist Carter's Grove Baptist Church on Highway 22 between Philomath and Crawfordville in Taliaferro County (near Highway 22 and Highway 44 crossing), has called Brian George of Washington- Wilkes as new pastor. Brian grew up in the First Baptist Church, Washington, a daughter church of Phillips Mill Baptist Church, which dates back to 1785. When First Baptist was constituted into a Baptist church, nine members of Phillips Mill, along with Brother Jesse Mercer, met with them on December 29, 1827, for the organization. Brian is married to Tara Turner of Danburg and they have two children, William and Amber. He and his family are faithful members of Fishing Creek Baptist Church, the first Baptist church organized in Wilkes County, was constituted in 1783; became the second oldest church in the Georgia Baptist Association and the fifth Baptist church constituted in the State of Church. Fishing Creek Church was asked by the Carter's Grove church to ordain Brian as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. A group from Carter's Grove attended his ordination service on Sunday, January 7, 2007. Among the group was Carter's Grove's oldest active member, Grace Mathis (Mrs. Guy) Beazley, who celebrated her 91st birthday Friday, January 12. She grew up at Phillips Mill. The ordination was conducted by Rev. Roy Cates, pastor of the Fishing Creek church; Rev. Albert Huyck, retired minister and former pastor of the candidate; and Rev. James Gland, Georgia Baptist Association Missionary. Rev. George is a son of Ed and Roberta Caldwell George of Washington. On behalf of Phillips Mill Baptist Church and being Tyrone's community columnist for around 45 years, we want to extend best wishes to this servant of God and his family as he becomes shepherd of the flock at Carter's Grove Baptist Church, his first church as a pastor. Carter's Grove and Phillips Mill have shared a number of pastors over the years, starting with the beloved late George Colon Steed, the first pastor I can remember at Phillips Mill as a child. Their last pastor, Dr. Thompson Holloman of Elberton, and his sweet wife Carolyn filled in some at Phillips Mill also. Dr. Holloman had to resign because of health problems. He is still on dialysis three times a week at this time. He is a kind, caring, soft spoken, Christian gentleman. Best wishes to Dr. and Mrs. Holloman for better health. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on January 6.
This is written with love and respect of all. Priscilla Maxwell.
