Paranormal investigators find spirited music at Fitzpatrick

According to paranormal investigators who "communed with the spirits" this weekend at The Fitzpatrick Hotel, ghostly music and partying continue in the hotel's ballroom, and Mrs. Fitzpatrick herself is thrilled at how the restored Victorian landmark has been brought back to life, as it were.

"The overall feeling was one of warmth, happiness, a real Southern welcome," said organizer and medium Deborah Senger. "We didn't sense anything negative."

Two dozen ghost-seekers and paranormal investigators, most from out of town, were in Washington for the weekend for a conference aimed at finding ghosts in the 1898 hotel. The weekend's activities included a historical tour, workshops, a paranormal investigation, and a séance.

The highlight of the weekend, she said, was the participation of wellknown paranormal investigator Janice Oberding who lead participants on the first known ghost-hunting effort attempted at The Fitzpatrick.

"We went through the hotel and recorded what we perceived," Senger said. "We sensed a lady in lilac in the dining room saying that something was out of place, a gentleman talking about a funeral, and a little girl. And Mrs. Fitzpatrick came through to welcome us. She was glad we were here, and she was thrilled that we were appreciating her hotel that she loved so much."

The investigators also perceived music and the feeling of a party, she said.

After the investigation, Senger said that she and the other investigators were shown around by Fitzpatrick co-owner Jim Carter. "We told him what we had picked up," she said, "and he told us the history of the hotel and tried to put into context what we'd perceived. He did a wonderful job of bringing the history to life."

The weekend wasn't all about ghost hunting, Senger said. "We did some major damage shopping in Washington - we had a great time, and everyone wants to come back to see more of Washington. We really appreciate the history of the area, and everyone has been very polite here."
