Food Pantry blessed by generosity

TO THE EDITOR:

This past Christmas season was a busy one for everyone, with gifts for friends and loved ones, decorations, and visiting with family and friends. But many of you took time out to also think of those among us who are less fortunate and regardless would have had a Christmas that might have been a hungry one.

The Washington Community Food Pantry located in the basement of the First United Methodist Church and staffed by members throughout the community has been blessed by an outpouring of generosity by Bi-Lo, the Movie Gallery, the Wilkes County Schools, the Senior Center, other churches, and individuals.

Washington-Wilkes is a generous community. The food pantry has outgrown its present site and has been searching for a place where the once a week distribution of food and clothing to needy persons could take place. Due to the generosity of a generous couple, Margaret and James Jones, the property formerly known as Leard's Nursery has been offered to fulfill that need.

The name of the food pantry will be changed to "God's Marketplace Inc." In addition to the food pantry a clothes closet will be opened for needy folks to obtain gently used clothing. It is anticipated that God's Marketplace, the food pantry and the thrift store, will follow the current schedule of the food pantry, one day a week on Tuesdays.

Again, thank you to all the generous businesses and individuals who have contributed food to the Washington Community Food Pantry.
