W-W wrestlers beat Oconee in comeback; two busy weeks ahead

John Lovvorn's overtime win helped lead the Tigers to victory over Oconee County during wrestling action last week.
A dramatic comeback win over a formidable opponent has given the Washington-Wilkes Tiger wrestling team a lift as the athletes look toward a couple of weeks of heavy competition. Wrestling against the Region 8- AAA runner-up Oconee County last week, the Tigers emerged with a 45-36 victory after having been down 18-30 in the early going.

The match began evenly enough as Trey McCants (152 lbs.) led off with a pin. Charlton Ware evened the score after W-W suffered losses at 160 and 171 pounds. Ryan Cutler got a win by forfeit but three consecutive losses at 285, 103, and 112 left the Tigers down by 12.

Junior John Lovvorn got the turnaround started with a thrilling 17-15 overtime victory at 119 pounds. One loss interrupted the rally before Evan Harrison (130), Tyson Gilland (135), Dywane Hampton (140), and D.J. Willis (145) chalked four consecutive pins to take the match.

The Tigers will compete in five matches over the next 12 days beginning with a four-way meet at Eagles Landing Christian Academy involving St. Pius, Athens Christian, and ELCA. On Saturday, January 27, the Social Circle Indians will host the Redskin Rumble beginning at 9 a.m.. Then next week the action continues when the Tigers host Athens Christian and Lakeside on Tuesday, January 30, beginning at 5 p.m.

On Friday, February 2, W-W will host Towns County and Winder-Barrow in the final home match of the season. On Saturday, February 3, the Tigers will participate in the Patriot Classic at Oglethorpe County with a 9 a.m. start. Area and state individual tournaments begin February 9.
