W-W Historical Foundation to hear Drake on dating historic buildings Dr. Tim Drake of Clemson University will be the speaker for the Sunday, February 4, meeting of the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation at 2:30 p.m., at the Robert Toombs House State Historic Site. Dr. Drake is a native of South Carolina and is a direct descendant of John C. Calhoun, Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832. He is also a descendant of Andrew Pickens. His personal collection of John C. Calhoun's belongings is on exhibit at the Washington Historical Museum. Dr. Drake's talk will deal with the dating of historic structures by ob- servation of their style, construction techniques, and materials. He will have with him lots of "show and tell" examples of locks, hinges, bricks, nails, wood, etc., to illustrate the techniques and materials used in the 18th and 19th centuries. Refreshments will be served following the meeting, and everyone attending the meeting may tour the Robert Toombs House free of charge, courtesy of the Historical Foundation. Members and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Dues for 2007 are now being taken.
