Learning in Retirement sets Western Civ course Feb. 5 Learning In Retirement, Washington Chapter, has scheduled a course on the Foundations of Western Civilization - Sumer to Greece, February 5 and 12, 2:30 p.m., at the Parish House. "Our course on the foundations of Western civilization is probably the most comprehensive of any yet offered by LIR," says Albert Long, president of the Washington chapter. In further describing the course, Joe Harris, curriculum committee chairman, said, "Our courses typically cover relatively narrow topics from the arts, science, religion, etc., but this one on the foundations of Western civilization describes where all this began." The lecturer for the course is the widely known Thomas Noble of Notre Dame University. Critics have said that he always provides the right anecdotes and examples and is always inspiring. "He creates images that you won't forget of the changing of events over time," Harris said. The lectures are richly illustrated and are the first DVD presentations of LIR. Part 1 of the series is set for Monday, February 5. This part extends in coverage from Sumer to Greece, Sumer being a populated area in the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. From the Sumerians, techniques for agriculture, writing, etc., were transferred to Greece where structures and operations for government, art, etc., were developed.
Learning In Retirement is open to retirees and others who support learning objectives.
