Callaway Scholarship awarded
William B. Ezzell (center) has been awarded of the Ella G. Callaway Scholarship and will enter the nursing program at Augusta State University. Brothers Jim (left) and Lawrence Burton presented the award during a ceremony on Friday, January 26, at Wills Memorial Hospital. "The scholarship was established to honor the memory of our grandmother, Ella G. Callaway, after her death on February 16, 1994," Jim Burton explained. "She was involved with the beginnings of Washington General Hospital, the precursor to Wills Memorial Hospital. She assisted Dr. C.E. Wills, for whom the institution is named, in the early years when the hospital was started." The scholarship was funded with monies from Mrs. Callaway's estate as well as by donations from friends and family seeking to honor her memory. "Our family feels confident that William B. Ezzell, the final recipient, will bring credit to his profession, just as our grandmother did," Burton said.
