In last week's column we made mention of Clark Hill (as we Georgians will always call it - not Strom Thurmond). Well, it was quickly pointed out that long before Clark Hill or Strom Thurmond, it was "the backwater." We're going to the backwater for the day. There's a great boat race down at the backwater. Have you been to Soap Creek to eat seafood? It's down at the backwater. Now, if we said we were going to the backwater, some people would roll their eyes and wonder what we were talking about. ..If you have been down to the old school after dark, where the dumpsters were moved, you will see that it is now illuminated. In fact, it looks like Broadway! Just your Tignall City Council at work. ..All the buzz last week was "little Elly" who was quite the brat on AirTran. She pitched a fit (screaming and crying), crawling under her seat, slapping at her parents, and would not come out. After a 15- minute delay, the airline representative asked the parents to get the child in her seat and buckled up. The parents said they needed a few more minutes to talk to Elly; however, there were 182 other passengers ready to go. Finally, the family was asked to leave the plane and was reimbursed the cost of their tickets and offered three round-trip tickets anywhere the airline flies as compensation. Later in the week, the parents were making the rounds to CNN, NBC, etc., stating that they were thrown off the plane because their child was crying. The opinion of people calling in to talk radio was that AirTran did the right thing. What do you think? ..Martha Stewart was seen dining at The Watershed, a restaurant opened several years ago by The Indigo Girls (singers), in Decatur. Don't you just know all the cooks, servers, everyone, were on pinsand needles. Martha always has everything perfect on her show and in her magazine. .. Some of you may remember Lydian Roberts Bartley who grew up in these parts - actually across from the old Armstrong Store on the Tignall Road - and now lives in Dalton. Well, Lydia and seven of her closest friends were in Washington over the weekend for a "girls retreat." They stayed with the Bundys at Wisteria Hall, had dinner Friday night at LaFayette Manor, and shopped and visited historic homes and sites on Saturday. Lydia inquired about her friends, Carolyn Dunaway Gammon and Kay Dunaway Tyler. The ladies all loved Washington and be assured Lydia and friends will be back. ..Carolyn Gammon had the privilege of being a judge at the spelling bee at the Washington-Wilkes Elementary School Tuesday of last week. The students were talking about how nervous they were and Carolyn told them that she was just as nervous as they were. We should be very proud of these boys and girls who were chosen to be in the spelling bee. They did have some tough words to spell. ..We extend our sympathy to the family of Leland Albea. He is survived by his brothers, Daryl and Clinton Albea, and sister, Phyllis Reese of Harlem. Leland's funeral was at the Beulah Baptist Church last Monday. Leland's daddy, Charles Albea, was a good friend of my daddy, Curtis Dunaway. They went fishing together and I know they got along together as friends because Daddy enjoyed talking and Mr. Charles was quiet and would listen. ..Richard and Carolyn Gammon and Dale Fincher visited with Larry Fort in Athens Regional Hospital last Monday. Larry and his wife Penny both need our prayers. ..We always enjoy attending the basketball games of our grandson Curt. These kids are fun to watch playing ball. Two members on the opposing team were called onto the floor to take the place of two other players. They were so excited about getting to go out to play and were running so fast they collided and fell down. ..Margaret Fortson joined Glenn Hendrix of Hartwell for a trip to Columbus for a visit with Glenn's new granddaughter Millie last Monday and Tuesday. She is the new baby of Jenny and Mark Lawrence and little sister of Creight. ..I saw Becky Dixon and her sister, Cliffy Ware of Evans, meeting at Fievet's again on Saturday. Cliffy's daughter Jenny was also with them. Jenny has started to work for Dr. Marshall Guill in Augusta. She said she told him after she got the job that her mother went to school with him. Fievet's is a good place to meet up with people, with all those cute gift ideas and also the good food. If you look, you end up buying. ..Beulah Baptist Church is hosting a pancake supper with all the trimmings at Harper's Personal Care on Bootlegger Lane in Washington Saturday, February 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be a bake sale with delicious cakes and pies baked by the Beulah Baptist ladies. Proceeds will go toward the building fund of Beulah Baptist Church. ..Gloria and Layton Harris hosted an Old Friends gathering Saturday night. Those friends present were Amelia and Charles Chafin, Mary Will and Ralph "Coot" Denard, Robbie and Curtis Tanner, Marion and Tony Hammond, and Doris Smathers. Everyone contributed to the fun, food, and fellowship. ..As I always say, the Tignall Baptist Youth Group knows how to take care of everyone when they host a lunch. The soup and sandwich lunch after the worship service was delicious with all the youth being of service with such nice manners. We are all very proud of these young people in knowing how to be of service to others. ..Mr. and Mrs. Bo Witcher of Elberton visited with Mary Ann Williams and Kason Bradley Sunday. ..Scott, Kathy, and Stacey Ware attended a birthday party at Chuckie Cheese in Athens for Kathy's nephew, Austin Etheridge, of Greensboro. They went on to Hartwell for supper with Scott's brother and his family, Jamie, Bobby, and Davin Howell. ..Wendy Truitt of Clarkesville visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Truitt, over the weekend. ..Attending the deacon ordination service for Frankie Ware at Fishing Creek Baptist Church Sunday were Renee Flanagan, Aubrey and Jewell, of Lincolnton, and Kristy Bufford and Madison of Thomson. Renee and Kristy are daughters of Gloria and Frankie Ware. ..Spending the day Sunday with Vivian and Louie Wolozin were Vivian's daughter Kathy and her husband, Dale Robertson, of Dacula. Kathy has been getting ready for a new grandchild that will be born in March. She has made about seven afghans for the new baby who will be born in North Dakota where Jessica and her husband live. She may need all those afghans in that cold weather. Kathy is a very talented person. She is always making curtains, pillows, and drawing her own pictures for cross stitch. ..Visiting with Tody and Dave Derrick from Thursday through the weekend were Jeff and Mandy Derrick and Noah from an island in the Azores. Jeff and Mandy's daughter, Sally Derrick, who is a student at the University of Georgia, joined them for the weekend. ..Spending three days with Celeste and O'Neil Adams last week were their daughter and her family, Amanda and Billy Range and Abby, of Monroe. On Wednesday they stopped by the Wilkes County Stockyard and had a good time watching the auction. Celeste decided she needed some cows instead of horses. ..Spending the afternoon and eating supper Sunday night with Pat and Graydon Bobo were Mike and Miriam Bobo and Miriam's mother, Ruth Branan, all of McDonough.
