The Office Cat
Tyrekus Bowman, former Tiger basketball superstar, is shown on the current issue of Sports Illustrated magazine's prestigious "Faces in the Crowd" page. Tyrekus - or A.J. as we called him when he worked at The News-Reporter during his high school years - is a junior forward for the Augusta State University basketball team. The article reads: "Bowman, a junior forward at Augusta State, scored a gamehigh 22 points in an 83-74 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State. It was the fifth straight win for the 14- 3 Jaguars, who are off to their best start since 1977-78. He has twice been named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week this season." . . . I don't often read Sports Illustrated unless somebody calls my attention to a special article, but Buzzy Randall, who is a charter subscriber to the magazine, tells me that it's a real big honor to be named on this "Faces in the Crowd" page and that the ones featured usually go on to big time careers. .. Tiger running back Kelmetrus (Meme) Wylie was shown in a fullwidth, quarter of a page picture in the sports section of the Sunday Athens Banner-Herald. He and Tiger defensive back Gary Wilburn were featured in the full-page spread in the paper after they signed to play football for the University of Connecticut. Tiger Coach Russell Morgan had driven the two players to the Atlanta airport on January 19 for their flight to Connecticut to visit the campus. After touring the campus and visiting Connecticut's sports facilities, they came back highly elated and subsequently committed to sign with the team. Meme and Gary have been best friends since the third grade. "I push him, and he pushes me," Meme said, and they expect to keep on pushing each other as they embark on this new career. They expect to be roommates at the university. We wish them well. .. Jeffrey Roth keeps moving up in the racing world. At the beginning of this year he moved from BAM Racing to Kevin Harvick Inc., and is now working on the #33 Busch Series car that will be driven by Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Tony Raines, Ron Fellows, and Cale Gale. Jeffrey will be traveling with the team doing the interiors on the cars at the racetrack and carrying front tires on the pit crew. Doing the interiors is an important position because it involves necessary safety systems inside the car and checking all of the equipment before every run on the racetrack. He will also be in direct contact with the drivers. The #33 car has won the last two Daytona spring races when driven by Tony Stewart. .. Members of the Episcopal Church of the Mediator, along with pastors and friends from other Washington-Wilkes churches, gathered at the home of Betty Slaton and Marion Slaton Sunday to welcome their their church's new minister and her husband to our town. Rev. Dr. Denise Moss is the new minister and her husband is Rev. Dr. David Moss, retired. They will be living in the rectory on East Liberty Street. .. Chef Joe Barnett's appearance on the Martha Stewart Show will probably be in the next week. The taping is February 6 and we do know that it will be at 12:00 noon on Fox, but not the exact day. We'll just have to check it out each day. .. Dr. Tony Guthrie is the new interim pastor at the First Baptist Church. He lives in Loganville and is a professor at Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta. .. The winter issue of Presbyterian College Magazine has news of several Washington-Wilkes people. Jeff Lukich is pictured in the bythe year graduate section. The article says that when he's not on his job as director of the McDuffie County Department of Family and Children Services, he runs and has competed in 25-30 road races last year. . . . Taylor Randall, granddaughter of Jo and Buzzy Randall, is pictured and quoted as part of the college's improvisation comedy troupe - Improv. . . . And Tracie and Trevin Burriss are in a group picture of graduates attending homecoming. .. I'm sure that by now most of our readers have seen the new plantings to replace the big oak tree on The Square. The plan was drawn and supervised by local landscape architect Robert Aiken and Kurt Wolfe, also a landscape architect. It includes four willow oaks, one on each corner of the center around the island where the old oak was. Robert tells me that the oaks are 10-11 feet in diameter and 30-plus feet tall. Seasonal color and uplights will be added around the oaks and the ligustrum in the center planter. I'll be anxious to see what it looks like in the spring. .. Irene and Julius Rousey will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on February 6.
