Tigers need to win four straight to get the playoff berth they want

LUCIOUS STEWART MOVES IN FOR A SHOT The junior is consistently the Tigers' high scorer on the court.
"We really need to win all four," Head Coach Don Keiser said, looking ahead to the final games of the regular basketball season. If they do, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers will definitely host the first round of the playoffs and the early opponents will be a lot easier to beat.

The trouble is, it can still go either way. W-W could end up on top or on the bottom. These four games are huge. "We need to finish first or second," Keiser continued, "We don't want to finish third or we'll be in trouble."

Right now, the Tigers' region record is 4-2. Morgan County and Putnam County also stand a 4-3. The Tigers have split with Putnam and will not play them again. Morgan beat W-W here but the two will play again in Madison on Tuesday, February 6.

While the region's other three teams (Oglethorpe County, Greene County, and North Oconee) seem to be battling it out for fourth place, even this close to the end of the season, anything can happen. Keiser had indicated at the beginning of the season how close the competition is for the 2006-2007 season and it's proving to be true.

But a four-in-a-row finish for WW would seal the season with a home playoff berth.

"It's very doable if we wake up and play and put four quarters together," Keiser said. "I feel like I've got better basketball players [than the other region teams]." But getting back to how close he's said the competition is this year, Keiser added:

"There's no doubt we could win all four. But there's no doubt we could lose all four, too."

In games played during the past week, the Tigers beat North Oconee on Tuesday, January 23, by the score of 61-55. Scoring was led by the Stewart brothers, Lucious and DeeDee, who pumped in 17 and 14 points, respectively. Larry Davis added 15 points to the effort.

The disappointment on Friday, January 26, was delivered late in the game by the Putnam County Eagles who pulled away in the last 1½ quarters to beat the Tigers 58-70.

"We were beating them at halftime 33-28," Keiser reported, "and we took a 10-point lead in the third, but they closed out the third beating us 48-51."

Illness probably beat W-W more than Putnam did. The Tigers second leading scorer, Jarekus Bowman, missed the game entirely and Khiry Tutt played "sick as a dog" and his performance suffered.

"We looked really good through 2½ quarters and then Putnam just took over," Keiser said. "They beat us on rebounds. They just got more rebounds and second shots than we did."

Lucious Stewart was again high scorer for the Tigers with 21 points and Davis has 11.

This Friday, February 2, the Tigers will host Greene County before traveling to Morgan County next Tuesday. The last game of the season will be at home against North Oconee on Friday, February 9.

Results of Tuesday's game at Oglethorpe, if available by press time, are reported separately.
