JOSH COSBY KEEPS HIS OPPONENT UNDER CONTROL IN A RECENT MATCH His last-minute win sealed the Tigers' sweep of a four-way meet last week at ELCA.
Washington-Wilkes Tiger wrestlers found a groove in action last week as they notched some strong victories both individually and as a team.

John Lovvorn and Tyson Gilland each won first place at the Redskin Rumble hosted by Social Circle involving a total of 13 competing teams. And as a team, the Tigers swept a four-way meet on Tuesday, January 23, at Eagles Landing Christian Academy.

Competing at 135 pounds in the Redskin Rumble, Gilland won his first round with a pin of Clarke Central's Kevin Farley. In the semifinal round, he pinned David Massey of Elbert County and then defeated Alcovy's Chris Reid 3-1 in the finals to take first place.

Lovvorn, competing at 119 pounds pinned Michael Johnson of Buford in the first round and cruised past Josh LaRue of Loganville 8-0 in the semifinal match. The final was a bit tougher as Lovvorn battled with Elbert's Mitchell Davis through two overtime periods to win it 3-2.

Charlton Ware has a strong showing at 189 pounds and advanced to the consolation semifinals.

In the second pairing of the quad meet, Athens Christian offered stiffer competition but still not enough to match W-W on the mats. The Tigers took the win at 48-33. Starting at 125 pounds, individual winners for W-W were:

130 - Evan Harrison by pin 135 - Tyson Gilland by forfeit 140 - Dywane Hampton by pin 145 - DJ Willis by pin 152 - Trey McCants by pin 160 - Jermayne Hanosek by pin 189 - Charlton Ware by pin

Derrick Ferris won a JV match by pin.

In the last match of the day, the Tigers faced the host team, ELCA, which is ranked No. 6 in the state in Class A. The match played out a bit more dramatically and came down to the last individual match.

The match began at 130 pounds and Evan Harrison pinned his opponent. Gilland got a forfeit at 135 pounds to put the Tigers ahead 12- 0. ELCA narrowed the gap to 12-6 before Trey McCants took an overtime win 12-10. Ryan Cutler got a pin at 189 and Brandon Howard took a forfeit at 285. But ELCA then moved ahead 27-33.

With two matches to go, Lovvorn took the mat at 119, pinned his opponent and evened the score at 33- 33. Then at 125 pounds, Josh Cosby took a close 7-6 victory to seal the Tigers' sweep at 36-33.

And again, Ferris won a JV match, 8-5.

The Tigers were at home on Tuesday, January 30, to host Athens Christian and Lakeside. They will be home again on Friday, February 2, to host Towns County and Winder-Barrow. The final match of the regular season will be the Patriot Classic at Oglethorpe County on Saturday, February 3.

Area and state individual tournaments begin February 9.
