The Army stops in for gas
This U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter made a two-hour stop at Washington-Wilkes Airport recently, making a pit stop for 1,200 gallons of fuel during a flight from Ft. Campbell, Ky. to Savannah. While on the ground, the helicopter drew a crowd of local visitors, airport operator Chris Hughes said, and the Army crew gave the visitors tours of the large cargo carrier. The Chinook, long the workhorse of the Army and Navy, can carry 33 fully armed troops, or 26,000 pounds of cargo. It was a trip down memory lane for Hughes, who now restores and rebuilds old aircraft at the airport. Chinooks were one of the first aircraft he qualified on more than 20 years ago, he said.
