Well, Old Man Winter has now made up for all those warm December days. While we are on winter weather, where did the meteorologist on television get the phrase "winter mix," referring to snow and ice? You'd think they were speaking of salad - as in a medley of mixed greens. Oh well, we got our winter mix last Thursday. ..It is hard to believe that Lafayette Manor celebrated its first anniversary on February 1. What a nice reception they had and what a crowd on such a nasty night. ..It is so sad to see our economy being destroyed by companies moving to foreign countries where workers are paid very low salaries. Now, the big three auto makers are having financial troubles, especially Ford Motor Company, who announced last week that they had big loss during 2006. I guess we all need to remember to try to buy American-made automobiles, as well as other items. ..This past week, it has been reported that a dead bobcat was seen at the Sandtown area dumpster; deer skin at the Old School area dumpster, and a pig's head (appeared to be a wild boar) near the Old School area dumpster. These misdeeds cannot be blamed on out-of-town hunters (hunting season is over and gone) abusing and misusing our dumpsters and the area around the dumpsters. If you kill an animal, please take care of it in a proper manner. Don't leave it for others to view, and for wild or domestic animals to drag it around the community. Where is our civic pride? ..Mr. and Mrs. Forrest (Billie Ann Harper) Hines visited with Hugh and Nobie Keener over the weekend. ..The Clarence Wilson family celebrated birthdays last weekend at their home with a huge family gathering. The meal consisted of ribs, lasagna, salad, garlic bread, birthday cake and ice cream. Birthdays were as follows: Abby Aaron, January 15; Janet Aaron, January 18; Debbie McCord, January 29; and Margie (Mrs. Clarence) Wilson, January 31. It should also be noted that Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wilson also celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary on January 31. The following were present at the weekend celebration: Janet, Jamie, and Abby Aaron of Tignall, and friend, Derek Thornton of Washington; Rick, Colby and Keller McCord of Thomson; Christi, Carson, and Brady Hobb of Thomson; Charlie and Debbie McCord of Thomson; Craig Chapman and friend, Tara Inglet, both of Thomson; Gayle and Jack Thomas of Franklin, N.C.; Neil, Kelly and Keaton Wilson of Tignall, and friend, Lindley Hall of Rayle. Congratulations to all those celebrating birthdays, and a special congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wilson on celebrating their sixtysecond wedding anniversary. .. Mrs. Betty Shedd traveled to Anderson, S.C., last weekend for the funeral of her brother, Edward Duncan. Mr. Duncan was Mrs. Shedd's last living sibling. Mrs. Margie Randall, sister-in-law of Mrs. Shedd, came to be with her during the passing of her brother and carried her out to dinner. Our sincere, heartfelt sympathy is extended to Mrs. Shedd during this sad time. ..Let's hope everyone will have their television tuned in on Martha Stewart Tuesday. We have to support our hometown boy - Joe Barnett. Shrimp and grits are getting to be a specialty in these parts. At one time, this dish was served only in coastal towns but it is now being prepared by several great cooks in the area. ..It is still great to pick up
The News-Reporter and see color pictures. Same type reaction as when movies were made in color. Oh, the age is showing. ..Did you pick your favorite commercial during the Super Bowl? Lots of people liked the muttturned Dalmatian on the Budweiser horse-drawn carriage. Others like the bunny and mouse one. As always, there were several great ones.

We can't seem to have a good snow any more. Some years ago I ruined a good pizza pan sliding down a snowy hill on it. The main topic of conversation these days seems to be global warming. If we are getting warmer then why is the ice cap over Greenland getting thicker? Also, I heard today that in the 12th century the earth was warmer than it is today. I want to know how anyone knows what the temperature was at that time when the first accurate thermometer wasn't made until 1641. I'm sure scientists can tell by studying the layers of the Earth. I also don't think a little ground hog can tell us whether we are going to have an early spring or not. Its fun to pretend though, isn't it? ..When we have nasty weather like we have been having, let's remember to feed the birds. Bluebirds love peanut butter, so you don't really have to buy birdfeed. Celeste Adams says that bluebirds don't eat seeds; they eat bugs and grubs, so they need our help this time of the year. ..Tignall has a celebrity among us! Tyrekus Bowman, son of Melissa Hawes Bowman, and a student at Augusta State University, was featured in the Sports Illustrated January 29. Tyrekus received a basketball scholarship at Augusta State University. I hear he is a super basketball star. Congratulations, Tyrekus. We are very proud of you. I really think I taught him. I always claim these talented students. ..Carolyn Gammon attended an Alpha Theta meeting and lunch at the First Assembly of God in Lincolnton on Saturday. Others from Wilkes County attending the meeting were Debbie Lindsey, Tricia Bridges, Ann Tiller, Daphne Albertson, Ann Haughey, Kim Bearse, Lisa Newsome, and Carol Souther. ..Let's remember all our sick people in this area: Gertrude Long, Donald Ware, Evan Harrison, Tracey Beggs, Celeste Adams, and Amber Jordan. There are many others I'm sure that I don't know about. We are glad to hear that Daisy Parker is improving with her knee surgery. ..We were saddened by the death of Charles Bradford. Charles and Tommy Bradford were our neighbors when I was a child. We went to Sunday School and Bible School together at Danburg Baptist Church. His funeral was at this same church last Friday. ..Coming for the funeral of Charles Bradford were Elrea Bradford, widow of Harry Bradford, who now lives in Thomson, and cousins, Melvin Hopkins of Dalton; Ray Hopkins of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; Johnny Ware of Watkinsville; and Gary Ware of Wadley. We extend our sympathy to Carolyn Reynolds. Jack Reynolds will be missed by many people. I know he was a wonderful Sunday School teacher when he taught an adult group at Tignall Baptist Church. ..Kay and Alex Tyler visited with Mr. and Mrs. Greg Tyler and children in Hoschton Sunday and attended church with them at the First Baptist Church in Winder. After church they all carried lunch out to Ruth Dunaway in Winder and enjoyed lunch with her. ..Congratulations to Celeste and O'Neil Adams' daughter and her family for making winning a family affair at an archery tournament in Gainesville. Joe Coots, their sonin law, tied for first place; Kim, their daughter, won first in her division; grandchildren, Chase and Connor, both won first place in their divisions. The Coots family is from Ranger. ..Don't forget the pancake supper given by Beulah Baptist Church on Saturday night at Harper's Personal Care on Bootlegger Lane. ..The North Wilkes Steering Committee will be meeting again on Thursday, February 8, to proceed with the cookbook they are planning to publish. I've heard many people say they want to be sure and get one of these cookbooks. Well, we'd better get some recipes in this cookbook, so get them in to the committee. I know you want to have one of your recipes in this latest Tignall's Famous Recipes.
