Martha unaccustomed to Joe's manners
An advertisement in this week's News-Reporter an nounces that Jason Cobb, M.D. will be the keynote speaker at the SNAP Recognition Event at New Saints CME Church Sunday. Jason is the son of Kay Frances Cobb and a graduate of Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Emory University in Atlanta. He is a member of the staff at the Emory School of Medicine. I remember when Jason was in high school and all the many honors he received. He was a very active member of the Wilkes County 4-H Club when Susan Branan was the Extension Service Director for the county and led the students in winning many honors for themselves and for the school.

Not many grandpas can get in their airplane and fly to a distant city to babysit their grandchildren and get back home that same day. But

Harris Blackmon did. He flew to Newnan one day last week to stay with his grandson, Edward Harris Blackmon III, while his dad was at work and his mom had a medical appointment. Edward Harris Blackmon III is the son of Bubba and Becky Blackmon.

Saturday is the day that there will be a pancake supper at Harper's Family Care Home on Bootlegger Lane in Washington. The supper is to benefit Beulah Baptist Church in building a family life center. The supper is from 5 to 7 p.m. No advance tickets are being sold. Donations will be accepted. Jimmy and Carolyn Harper are the owners and managers of the family care home and from all the reports that I hear, it's a very fine place.

Joe Barnett represented his hometown in great fashion Tuesday on the Martha Stewart Show. Joe prepared his prize-winning "Shrimp and Grits" while carrying on a running conversation with his host. She commented on Joe's frequent "Yes Ma'am" in answer to her questions and Joe told her it was a Southern tradition and "just in me." Some of Joe's beautiful home and hotel decorations were shown on the show and drew many oohs and ahs from the audience.

In last week's column, I quoted an article about Jeff Lukich which was printed in the Presbyterian College Magazine. It turns out that there's more to the story than appeared in the magazine. Jeff's wife,

Mary Beth Rhodes Lukich, called to give me the facts. Mary Beth is the director of the McDuffie County Department of Family and Children Services and Jeff is the director of the Clarke County Department of Family and Children Services. They are the only husband and wife in the history of the state who both are directors in the department. Washington Wilkes, which is home to Mary Beth, is almost centrally located for both of their jobs. They live in the "pink house" on East Robert Toombs Avenue, just past the Washington Historical Museum. Mary Beth is the daughter of

Charles and Mary Rhodes of Washington-Wilkes.

Norris says the sleet we had last Thursday gave us .95 of an inch of precipitation which is all we've had thus far for February. I didn't really think we would have sleet Thursday morning as predicted because at 9:30 Wednesday night the moon was shining and there were some stars out. But along about 2 a.m., I heard it on my window.

Joseph Baldwin has added still another event to his long list of musical activities. As a student in the School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, he is going to be participating in the university's dance marathon in March. It will be a 30-hour marathon with 600 dancers seeking to raise funds for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) and the Evanston Community Foundation. The marathon is billed as "one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the world."

Washington-Wilkes' own champion turkey caller - Jeff Murphy - won the Georgia State Friction Calling Championship held in Atlanta at the Atlanta Expo Center last week with a score of 218. This win qualifies Jeff for the Grand National Championship competition for 2008. When he won in South Carolina last year he qualified for the Grand National Friction this year and that will be coming up on February 22-25 in Nashville, Tennessee. The 2008 event will be held in Atlanta for the first time in 15 years. Read more about Jeff elsewhere in this paper.

The annual John Duggan Scholarship Dinner sponsored by the Washington Woman's Club in memory of John who died of cancer as a teenager in 1972 is all set for Monday night. Speaker for the program is Smoky Turman, a Tiger teammate of John. The first scholarship was given in 1978 and has been given each year except one since then.
