Wrestlers look ahead to individual, state tournaments
The week's action began last Tuesday, January 31, when the Tigers hosted Athens Christian School and Lakeside-Evans. Results are as follows. Following the first of the three events of the meet, senior Tiger wrestlers were honored in a brief ceremony which included family members. Those wrestlers honored included Dywane Hampton, DJ Willis, Trey McCants, Charlton Ware, and Jesse Crago. Match results are as follows. Washington-Wilkes - 47 Towns County - 24 119: John Lovvorn by pin 125: Josh Cosby by pin in 2 OTs 130: Evan Harrison by pin 140: Dywane Hampton by pin 145: DJ Willis by 24-9 technical fall 152: Trey McCants by pin 189: Charlton Ware by pin 215: Ryan Cutler by forfeit Washington-Wilkes - 42 Winder-Barrow - 36 119: John Lovvorn by 16-1 technical fall 125: Josh Cosby by forfeit 130: Evan Harrison by 14-5 major decision 140: Dywane Hampton by forfeit 152: Jermayne Hanosek by forfeit 160: Trey McCants by 9-3 decision 189: Ryan Cutler by forfeit On Saturday, February 3, the team participated in the Patriot Classic at Oglethorpe County. Illness prevented several of the wrestlers from competing including junior Tyson Gilland who was a heavy favorite to win his weight class. In the tournament, John Lovvorn finished in second place at 119 pounds and DJ Willis finished fourth at 145 pounds.
The area individual tournament will begin this Friday, February 9. From there, qualifying wrestlers will continue on to the state individual tournament on February 16.
