Canopy will provide a place to be thankful

TO THE EDITOR:

Only because I was mentioned by name in her letter to the editor in last week's News-Reporter concerning the appropriateness of the Downtown Square landscape design do I respond to my friend Chrean Brown.

First, I am not a landscaper nor a landscape architect, but I know one when I see one. The credentials of Robert Aiken far surpass those of any other architect I have ever known. I am delighted we were able to have a local person of Mr. Aiken's abilities to design the area, hand pick specimen plant materials, and oversee every phase of installation, all for the unbelievable sum of - not a penny.

As for the public input, the Downtown Development Authority has been working on this site plan for almost two years. Authority meetings are always open to the public. They encourage input from interested citizens. Once consensus was achieved by the DDA the plan was submitted to the Washington City Council for approval - again in a public meeting.

I applaud the efforts of the DDA. I appreciate the generosity of Mr. Aiken. I thank the City of Washington for implementing an excellent plan for our town square.

When spring comes and the leaves turn green, the flowers bloom, and the birds sing, let's all pause happily under the canopy of the new trees and thank God for a beautiful little city like Washington.

HENRY HARRIS
