Square looks fantastic

TO THE EDITOR:

When it was first decided that the tree on The Square had to come down, I was disappointed, but I don't miss that tree at all.

We now have a fantastic-looking Square: beautiful trees that will provide shade to be able to sit out there, and a centerpiece that when completed will be even more lovely than it already is.

How very lucky Washington- Wilkes is to have Robert Aiken live here and be willing to VOLUNTEER his many years of professional expertise in designing and securing the trees and plants, and getting it implemented. Those trees are perfectly matched.

Mrs. Brown, to think of leaving the design of The Square to the community to decide its look certainly shows those words were uttered by someone who does not serve on any committee. And if you want to see the Downtown architecture, just look up while you are walking your dog. We are able to see the buildings better now than before. And by the time these trees are big enough to block anything, you and I will be long gone.

Perhaps if you attended City Council meetings you would have known how the decisions regarding The Square were made.

And just think, if the holes for those trees had not been dug, we would never have been lucky enough to have reached the bricks of the foundation of the 1817 Courthouse - special to me because it was my great-great-grandfather, Frederick Ball, who was the architect of the Courthouse. Now I have a brick!

Everyone should be standing up applauding Robert Aiken for all his hard work and congratulating the City for their good judgment in selecting him for the job. And most definitely we should be thanking him personally for giving so much for nothing.
