The Washington Little Theater Co. will be presenting the musical "Gypsy" during tour weekend and the next weekend. The musical stars Debbie McLeod, with Sue Davidson as director; Debbie as musical director; and choreography by Cynthia Aultman. .. The big news this week is that Washington-Wilkes' own Hillary Lindsey received a Grammy for Country Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards Sunday night. The song is her popular "Jesus Take the Wheel." . . . I'm sure that's a first for Washington-Wilkes. .. It looks like work has begun on the renovation of the old Wendy's building for a new Zaxby's. .. There is lots of illness around with flu-like and cold-like symptoms, and stomach viruses. Superintendent of Schools Joyce Williams said Tuesday that there were 150 children out of school that day, with 70 of them being in the primary school. There has also been lots of teacher absenteeism with the same symptoms. .. Lawrence Burton told me about some special guests he and Sandy had during the weekend. Former Washington-Wilkes residents, Pinky and Tony Young, who now live in Hickory, N.C., are always on the lookout for opportunities to visit here. Wendell Cramer of Hickory has hunting land in the Mallorysville area of Wilkes County. Friday he called the Youngs to see if any of them would like to fly with him to Washington-Wilkes and spend the day. Tony was planning to take daughter Mallory to a swimming meet; and daughter Cecelia had a church retreat, but Pinky and Olivia were free and took Wendell up on his offer. They came and spent the day with the Burtons, arriving about 10 a.m. They left about 7:00 in the evening for the 35- minute flight back to Hickory. . . My spouse says that's the way to travel. .. Kelley Roberts and Rashad Bolton, students at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School, will be exploring Australia and New Zealand for 21 days this summer. They will be part of the People to People Student Ambassador educational travel program as members of the CSRA delegation. Kelley is the son of Milton and Terry Roberts; and Rashad is the son of Lilvender and Jerome Bolton. .. One of my favorite ladies has a birthday Thursday, February 15. Mary Wright Blue will be 102 years old. That's not a typographical error. She really will be one hundred and two. She lives at Washington Manor where she participates in all the activities there and gets out for community meetings and luncheons with friends. She's also an active member of the First Baptist Church and plays the piano beautifully. .. There were lots and lots of people in town during the weekend for the Revolutionary Days celebration of the Battle of Kettle Creek. I'm hoping that when they had time off they spent some money in our town. . . . There were so many people attending the activities at the battlefield that there was hardly enough room to accommodate them. Maybe the promoters will enlarge the area. .. The Super Bowl Sports page of The Augusta Chronicle on Sunday, February 4, featured a very large picture of Charlie Waters, former North Augusta, Clemson University, and Dallas Cowboys football star. Charlie is Mark Waters' brother and, like Mark, grew up in Washington-Wilkes. Charlie played in five Super Bowl games over a period of 12 years with the Cowboys who won two of those five games. He especially remembers Super Bowl XII when the Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10. "I played 12 years, the last 10 seconds on the clock against the Broncos, when we looked up . . . just the greatest moment. People that reach goals can relate to that." Charlie also won a ring in Super Bowl VI, when his team defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3. .. Doug Janousek, a personal chef from Florida, will be cooking at the Washington Farmers Market (across from the Old Jail) Saturday morning. At noon he will serve what he has prepared. A cookbook illustrated by Anne Jenkins, owner of The Point of Art gallery in Union Point, will be available at the demonstration. The chef is considering opening a bistro in Union Point.
