Tigers in state playoffs for sixth straight year

LUCIOUS STEWART SOARS OVER HIS OPPONENT He had 27 points and 10 rebounds against N. Oconee Friday.
The Washington-Wilkes Tiger basketball team is in limbo right now and that's because of good news. When the boys beat North Oconee last Friday night, they secured a second place finish in the sub-region and guaranteed themselves a trip to the state playoffs. It's the sixth straight year that W-W has made it to the state brackets.

But while all that was going on, Greene County was beating Putnam and that put the GC Tigers in a tie for first place with the War Eagles.

The tie-breaker went to Washington-Wilkes and the Tigers thereby earned a bye until this Friday. So they will rest up and wait until Putnam, Greene, Morgan, and the teams from the other sub-region continue playing off this week.

On Monday night, Greene beat N. Oconee and Oglethorpe sneaked up on Morgan - in five overtimes - so the GC Tigers and the Patriots played again on Tuesday. Greene won that game and played Union County on Wednesday. The winner of that game will face the W-W Tigers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Dawson County.

Meanwhile, Rabun County, Banks County, and Fannin County are playing off to see who got to face Putnam on Wednesday. The winner of all that will play Dawson County on Friday following the Tigers' game.

Then, on Saturday, Friday's winners will play each other and Friday's losers will play each other to determine seedings for the state playoff brackets. Those games will begin next week.

And aside from all that, Tiger superstar Lucious Stewart was named All-Region, Kelmetrus Wylie was honorable mention, and Head Coach Don Keiser was named Coach of the Year for Region 8-AA.
