Wilkes 4-H Dairy Show Team to compete in Perry Saturday

The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Show Team members are (front row, lr) Hannah Strother, Miles Chafin, Liam Smith, Marisa Sifre, Logan Griffin, (back row) William Thomas, Grant Chafin, Morgen Swann, Lauren Chafin, Marlyse Sifre, and Colby Moore.
The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Show Team is heading to Perry for the 2007 State Junior Commercial Dairy Heifer Show this weekend. "The team has been working hard under the volunteer leadership of Frank and Carol Jackson," said County Agent Rick Smith who reported that the team has grown by eight exhibitors this year.

Returning to the Dairy Show Team are veteran 4-Hers Lauren Chafin, Grant Chafin, and Morgan Swann. New to the team are Logan Griffin, Marisa Sifre, Marlyse Sifre, Hannah Strother, Miles Chafin, Colby Moore, Liam Smith, and William Thomas.

In preparation for next week, these hard-working 4-Hers and volunteers have been busy racking up the first place finishes. While they made a good start at the Elbert County show, it was in Putnam County where Morgan Swann took first in showmanship, showing the new showmen how it's done. Also in Putnam County Marisa Sifre walked away with a first place in weight class.

Later, in front of a home crowd, Grant Chafin took first place in showmanship while teammates Hannah Strother and Morgan Swann won firsts in their respective weight classes. Finally, not satisfied with first in their class, Hannah went on to take Grand Champion and Morgan got Reserve Champion.

At the larger show in Athens the competition gets harder, but that did not sway Hannah from yet another first place ribbon in her weight class. Also, significantly at the Athens show, the Wilkes County 4-H members put the "TEAM" in Show Team by placing all 11 exhibitors in the top 10 in showmanship.

"This is an outstanding accomplishment and represents the hard work and dedication exhibited by our 4-Hers and their volunteer leaders," Smith said. "Congratulations to all and good luck in Perry."
