Something good on TV
By GARY TOOLE
I was watching an old "Bonanza" rerun on television when I caught something that was a good moral in one of the stories.

I know some of these smart alecs make fun of Bonanza - a bunch of grown men sitting around saying "Pa this and Pa that!" This particular program was about an elderly couple. The old man was a swindler and he swindled the Cartwrights, who have soft hearts, right out of their money. But Hoss brought them back and on it went.

To make a long story, short, the town was just full of orphan boys who were stealing from everyone and living in the street. So the old man was good to the boys. Finally the old gentleman did another swindle job on a crook himself. The crook crooked a bunch more and the whole town was up in arms.

Finally the old man went to trial and he tried to con the judge by saying that he did what he did to raise money for a foster home for the street boys. The judge wasn't buying it until Hoss brought in the boys and they convinced the judge.

I'm getting a little ahead of the story. Prior to that, Mr. Cartwright got up and said, "Nobody wanted to give anything to help these poor boys. They just talked about it but never showed any charity toward doing something. But just as soon as this old fellow came along with this get rich quick scheme then you all were ready to dish out your money."

What a wonderful moral thought and truth that would apply to this day and time.

Now, the rest of the story. It's a happy ending I think. The judge sentenced the old man to five years probation to run the foster home that he commissioned the town to build. It was built and this swindler turned good guy and he and his wife lived happily ever after taking care of these boys.

What a great story. There's something good on TV for a change.
