State patrol, Wilkes deputies set up weeknight road checks

The Georgia State Patrol and the Wilkes County Sheriffs Office teamed up for three separate roadblocks Monday night in Wilkes County, law enforcement officials report.

"Leaders from the two agencies stated that Friday and Saturday night roadblocks have become routine," said GSP spokesman TFC Brent Marxsen. "They decided that it would be a good idea to have highvisibility enforcement during the week as well. This wasn't designed to catch the public off guard but rather to promote traffic safety and deter criminals from getting on the road.

Roadblocks were set up on the Greensboro Highway (Highway 44) at the intersection with Harris Road, at the other end of Harris Road at the intersection with the Sharon Road, Highway 47. The third was on Hwy 78 in Rayle.

The roadblocks resulted in one arrest for driving under the influence, three arrests for driving on a suspended license, two citations for child restraint violations, two arrests for driving while unlicensed, and one citation for open container of alcohol.

At least two other drivers were determined to be drinking but not under the influence and were removed from the road for safety, Marxsen said. Numerous courtesy warnings were also given.
