Duggan Scholarship Dinner held Feb. 12 at Woman's Club

Mary Duggan (center) and Rev. L. V. (Smokey) Turman are welcomed to the John Duggan Memorial Scholarship Dinner by event chairman, Geraldine Dill.
A capacity crowd filled the Woman's Club building on Monday evening, February 12, for the annual John Duggan Memorial Scholarship Dinner sponsored by the Washington Woman's Club.

The scholarship in John's memory is awarded each year and the dinner raises funds for it. John, son of Dr. and Mrs. Dan Duggan, died of cancer at the age of 18.

The clubhouse was festive with Valentine decorations and cut flowers. A beautiful vase of red carnations was in the center of the table reserved for the Duggan family. A mixed arrangement was behind the piano. Individual tables were centered with votive candles in miniature hurricane lamps placed on white lacy doilies. The mantles held an array of camellias.

Following the steak dinner provided by "Bones," Scholarship Chairman Geraldine Dill introduced Rev. L.V. (Smokey) Turman who put away his prepared speech and spoke from the heart about his friend and classmate, John. After he spoke, John's mother, Mary Duggan, told some of the highlights of his life. Buddy Lindsey told about John's journey through the "Punt, Pass and Kick" contest as a young boy and the fun he had in taking him for the national contests. Skeet Willingham told of some of John's accomplishments as a member of the Tiger football team and noted that some his records still stand. John's brother, Dr. Dan Duggan Jr. of Augusta, told of his sorrow at missing the last two years of John's life but told of leaving college to come home to be with him. There were many other memories, happy and sad, shared during the evening.

To close the evening, Ashley Barnett, accompanied by Peyson Moss, sang a Valentine song.

Members of Mrs. Duggan's family attending with her were her sons and their families, Tom, Gail, Elizabeth and Thomas Duggan of Washington, and Dan, Patti and John Duggan of Augusta.
