Joshua Welch of Rayle named national science award winner
The USAA recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students and is a prestigious honor. Joshua is the son of Bob and Charlotte Welch of Rayle and is a student at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School. He was nominated for this national award by Jennifer Atkinson, a biology teacher at the school. His biographical information will appear in the USAA official yearbook which is published nationally. "Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history," said Dr. George Stevens, founder of the USAA. "Certainly, USAA winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement." The Academy selects winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors, and other qualified sponsors and upon the standards of selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a qualified sponsor.
Joshua is the grandson of Tommy and Fran Thaxton of Rayle; Charles and Mary Bradford of Washington; and Bobby and Jackie Welch, Buford.
