Annual steer and heifer show and sale will see best young Wilkes exhibitors

Twelve Wilkes County students will be participating in the 53nd Annual Washington Area Junior Steer and Heifer Show Saturday, March 3, at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center in Washington. Some 29 students from Wilkes, Lincoln, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties will be exhibiting their steers and heifers.

The Wilkes County students participating are Ethan Armour, Jackson Armour, Greg Callaway, William Garrard, Josh Goldman, Wright Gunter, Dalton Howard, Tommy Howard, Sheena Kopecky, Gabe Strother, Tabitha Tench, and Brantley Walker.

Exhibitors from Lincoln County are: Justin Ashmore, CJ Goldman, Carson Goldman, and Dalton Tankersley.

Exhibitors from Madison Co. include: Tyler Arnold, Kim Chandler, Eddie Hilgurn, Stephanie Hilburn, and Shelly Patton.

From Oglethorpe Co., exhibitors include: Bettina Armour, Melissa Dove, Shelby Eidson, Taylor Houser, McCall Houser, Kyle Little, Matt Simmons, and Chris Smith.

Check-in time for all steers and heifers entering this year's show is from 10 a.m. until 12 noon, Friday, March 2, with the steer and heifer banquet to be held at the ag center that night beginning at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $5 for students and $10 for adults, with showmen admitted free.

Judge for the event will be Jary Douglas of Athens.

The livestock show will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and includes events such as the heifer show; twelfth grade showmanship (steer and heifer); tenth and eleventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); eighth and ninth grade showmanship (steer and heifer); fourth through seventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); the steer show; County Group of Five; and Breeder's Special.

Rev. Dale Fincher, pastor of the Tignall Baptist Church, will serve as the chaplain for the event.

The show will conclude with the annual steer sale at 2 p.m.
