Best 'Optimistic' speakers named; Pope, Colvard attend District Band
By W-WMS SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS

Washington-Wilkes Middle School has been very active in sports and community contests this month. The baseball tryouts where held, students participated in the Optimist Club speech contest, two students attended District Band in Augusta, and art contest winners were announced. All of these activities are second to academics as students and teachers are actively working on the necessary Georgia Performance Standards in order to get ready for the Georgia CRCT in April.

Desmond Barnett, Graham Echols, Matson Keiser, Trent Martin, and Zach Murray are the eighth graders who were successful in making the Bteam baseball team, which usually consists of underclassmen in high school.

Blake Connell, Jarrett Gaye, DaQuan Heard, Tabor Jackson, Dennis King, David Martin, James McAvoy, Robert McGill, Michael Pharr, Joe Rogers, Tom Saggus, Chase Shelton, and Whit Winfrey made the middle school baseball team. The middle school team tryouts ended on February 23.

Dixie Lee Trimm and James Milton took first place honors at the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. Rashida Watson and Rob Lovvorn placed second and Emily McNure and Damon Norman placed third. The Optimist Club Oratorical Contest was held on February 22 at W-WMS. This year's theme was "My biggest challenge is..." The contestants for the girls were Angela Broome, Kelsey Brooke, Kenya Burns, Christen Lewis, Emily McNure, Calli Nickels, Tiare Tatum, Dixie Lee Trimm, Rashida Watson, and Amanda Wood. The boys' contest participants were Milton James, Rob Lovvorn, and Damon Norman. Congratulations to all of the participants for a very tough competition.

Haley Colvard and John Pope attended District Band in Augusta. They auditioned for this honor earlier this year. They started practicing with their bands on February 22 in order to be prepared for their concert on February 24. These two students were grateful for this experience and hope that more W-WMS students will be selected to attend next year's District Band.

Angela Broome was the first place school winner of the 2007 poster contest for the University of Georgia Traffic Prevention Institute. Her entry has now been submitted to the county-wide competition.

Brittany McMahan won honorable mention for the Georgia Department of Agriculture 2007 Annual Agriculture Day contest.

The W-WMS March calendar consists of Beta Club inductions that will be held on March 5 at 6 p.m in the cafeteria. The third nine-week grading period ends on March 9. Report cards will go home on March 14. Spring pictures will be taken on March 14 that may be individual or friend pictures.
