THE ACADEMIC CORNER Students at WWPS have a 'song in their heart' and are willing to share it with others! WWPS Music program, led by Mrs. Ann Tiller, is an integral part of learning for all students in grades K-3rd. Students sing songs, play instruments, and learn how to use their voices to share feelings. Students even compose music and explore musical ideas through the Music Ace computer program! With this program, they can practice and test their knowledge and skills. Many times throughout the year, students at WWPS perform for parents and friends and share what they have learned. A special musical group at WWPS is the "Primary Performers". These students have shown a special interest in music and a greater willingness to perform. Interested students are afforded the opportunity to audition to be a member of this group. Students must maintain excellent behavior and do their part to make the group a success. The songs they sing often have special messages about friendship, environmental awareness, community service, work ethic and building peace. The group performs for many different groups: students, parents, civic clubs, community organizations, and others. The children use simple props (white gloves, hats, etc) and have often incorporated sign language into their performance. They are taught the importance of stage presence and eye contact. They are taught to use their hands, bodies and facial expressions to help portray feeling and rhythm in their performance. It is not unusual for the group to evoke strong emotions from their audience - especially with their signature song, "One World".
Currently, there are 40 students involved in Primary Performers. The next performance will be Tuesday, March 13, 7:00 pm at the school. March is "Music in Schools" month!
