Too sick for school? Nurse tells parents when to keep home Patty Stewart, nurse at the Washington Wilkes Primary School, has provided information for parents and others about sending children to school during this time when there are so many illnesses prevalent in the area. "Children with fever over 100 degrees should stay home until there is no fever for 24 hours," Stewart says. "If you treat a fever with medicine before school, the fever can return and your child may still be contagious."
She recommends that parents consult their doctor if the child has a fever with pain, rash, weakness, vomiting, or diarrhea.
